Yea it's pretty obvious from that new footage that Max knew exactly what he was doing. He looked in his mirrors several times and knew Hamilton would have a strong run on him around the outside. And he simply decided that he wasn't going to let him by no matter what, and braked much later than needed to cut Hamilton off.

Very lucky it didn't end in contact for one or both of the drivers. And extremely lucky to have gotten away without a penalty. I know in the lower categories people will say, well the guy defending is entitled to his line and brake as late as he wants, but based on the standard established in F1, that ought to have been a slam dunk penalty I'm afraid.

that's the main outcome of tarmac runoffs, drivers feel they can do whatever it takes because they got room for error

back in the day only drivers who did everything possible to win (Schumacher) did that with no remorse

I doubt it, Red Bull could argue that Max could have gone quicker had they been given a 5 second penalty, to still finish ahead of Bottas.

Well it IS the FIA we are talking about. They seem to be making stuff up as they go.

I am genuinely interested in what they say and do.

Yeah, we talked for years about Schumacher's block on Alonso at Silverstone in 2003, because it was rare for anybody to be that far of a dick. Now you see dick moves all across the board, even from "nice" guy like Sainz/Leclerec, and the standard has shifted. We barely react until it's really obvious.

Case in point: Bottas was properly shoved completely off the track at turn 1 last Sunday, and nobody even cares. Even Montoya Left more space to Michael, despite coming from miles behind and hardly in control of his own car. Now it just became normal, especially when it's a certain driver on the inside. I read here a post suggesting that people should somewhat not attempt battling him on the outside because they know he will do it, which is a funny reversal of values. Stroll also now has the reputation of someone who closes doors regardless of overlap on the inside, but he gets away with it (except that time he fucking flipped, still won't learn). So people should be bullied in expecting dirty racing, out of habit, and never attempt to -cleanly- hold their ground?

This all leaves a bitter taste in my mouth really. "Let them race" only works when there is an unspoken sense of respect shared by the majority of the grid, not a winning-at-all-costs mentality. That sense of respect comes from risk/danger IMHO, but that ship has sailed long ago, along with barriers and open cockpits and gravel traps.

apply the 5 second penalty retroactively then he would be behind Bottas and it would almost make Spa null and void

that's what I was thinking, ditch one of those Mickey Mouse races and go to Spa instead to compensate that farce, even if it's fucking cold and wet

and only get out after 44 laps

I think you just have to accept that this was handled differently because it was between the two championship leaders (and would have been the same had Lewis been the one opening ze leg). Had this been for 8th there may have been 5 sec penalties handed out. If you don't understand why stewards might be reluctant to get involved in the closest championship battle in over a decade unless they absolutely have to, I hate to break it to you but you might not be cut out for running a major sport.

That is the most pathetic excuse imaginable.

How long do you need to watch this sport and bitch about it not meeting your expectations before you get how F1 works? Rulebooks and stewards' decision precidents won't get you far.

I'm clearly the odd one out here for not seeing the point in repeatedly making the same captain obvious statements this thread is full of about FIA being shockingly hypocritical in their principles, Michael Masi being criminally unqualified for not observing some precident set in the 1983 Molvanian GP, track limits being such a waste of time when the clear solution is to go to unfathomable expense to fix every track or just ignore limits like that's not going to end in farce or death, etc.

Is it just me.....or does that track surface look rather sketchy?

And the video at the bottom....Tilke had free reign to build any kind of track. And that is the layout he came up with? I just assumed it was using existing roads.

This track looks like Tilke tried to draw Avus while sitting in a fishing boat during a storm

So is this going to be like Qatar? Where we make fun of the track, its shape (sperm OLOLO!!1), and how shitty racing is going to be. Only for it to turn rather spectacular, with drivers themselves praising it for being fun and fast, and with cars following close and providing good racing on race day?

is just like Caesar's Palace GP, they could have gone in many ways but did it the lazy way because the rights were granted

the only difference is that the one in Vegas was to launder mafia's money and now is sportswashing

It does look sketchy. Even though I must say it looks better than, say, Yeongam in its first year.

Just hoping the wiring is done and we won't get a blackout during the race. That would spice up the show tho'. :whistling:

they will eventually do what Qatar did that was to pay some westerners to attend the event and pretend they were supporting the drivers
