It could be better as they know the procedures and are organizing it all earlier. But it could be worse as there could be a new Covid mutation....

10 races in the Middle East and 13 races in Europe, or vice versa, is my guess.

I've been told we won't achieve a COVID normal (no travel restrictions) until around half the world, 3 billion people, are vaccinated. In 1 month America has vaccinated like 3 million people and most countries won't get a vaccine until mid-year.

So I expect another European/middle east only season.

Who's your source?

Hmm but F1 could still get an exemption from those restrictions. It will be a country by country case I think. I know you Aussies have been extra careful.

True. If there are caps on crowd numbers, I expect street circuits to not go ahead, Monaco, Singapore, Vietnam (if that happens), because financially it's stupid to pay millions setting up the track if they can't get 1/4 or 1/3 the crowd capacity. They'd have to get massive TV numbers to make up the loss. Sochi went ahead last year but Russia is a unique country, they're probably willing to take the losses.

As you said, Australia is being super cautious, so I expect Albert Park won't go ahead, in March anyway. Our government will demand 14 day quarantine from the entire paddock, or everyone member must be vaccinated, don't see them having exceptions.

But who knows, here we had 60 odd days without a case, then we've had breakouts across two states, it changes so much so quickly.

Yeah it's hard to make any predictions these days

Would be a shame if Albert Park didn't happen, was already kinda looking forward to it since we missed it last year :(

On another not going back to Covid-19, as things stand I can see Silverstone being cancelled. I know it's still months away but this government just dithers until its way too late, they've utterly lost control here. Honestly the Britain based teams should look at getting temporary HQ on the European mainland.

Nothings confirmed, but it looks like a Bahrain double header to start the season.

We're hoping the AusGP will be jammed into the schedule, maybe in the USA/Mexico slot? Regardless it's in serious doubt.

Why would the Australian GP be cancelled? Assuming of course there will be no spectators and F1 teams/drivers and the FIA are all isolated from most of the populace. Might as well cancel the entire season then.

Well the fact they have to build the circuit I would say makes it be a in a different situation than the a purpose built facility

Great opening post! It's nice to see all the venues from above, though I'm reluctant to believe we'll see them all this year!

That's really interesting! And obviously you know 100x better than me but I was surprised seeing Melbourne back in the calendar given I've been following the news from Australia and NZ every day. To me, it seems Australia knows how to handle the virus and I can't see them let in all of F1, let alone the issue that it's not a permanent track but one that needs to be set up. I'd be surprised to see Melbourne in March, unfortunately.

F1 season-opening Australian GP set for postponement

Quote:
After seeing its 2020 calendar undergo significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, F1 aimed to return to a more regular season in 2021 by announcing a 23-race schedule in November.

The season was due to begin with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on 21 March, marking the first running of the race since 2019 after it was cancelled just hours before Friday practice was due to begin last year.

But with Australia still enforcing strict travel restrictions, and amid global fears over the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19, doubts have been growing about the viability of the race.

Motorsport.com understands that the Australian Grand Prix now looks set to be postponed until later in the 2021 season, forcing a possible reshuffle of the races later in the year.

It means that the Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for 28 March now looks poised to become the 2021 season opener.

A spokesperson for F1 told Motorsport.com that the series "proved that we could return to racing safely and delivered what many thought was impossible in March".

"We have set out our 2021 calendar and look forward to the return of F1 in March this year," he added.

Construction work on the temporary street circuit at Albert Park in Melbourne typically begins towards the end of January, but ticket sales are yet to begin for the race.

It is thought that an announcement postponing the grand prix is set to be made later this month.

Australia has taken a strict approach towards limiting the spread of COVID-19 since the outbreak, closing its borders to non-residents shortly after the F1 race was cancelled in March.

Strict quarantine rules have been in place since March, forcing all arrivals in Australia and those moving between states to spend two weeks in designated quarantine hotels.

There are currently 279 active cases estimated in Australia, while there have been 909 total deaths reported resulting from COVID-19.

Melbourne is currently preparing to host its first major international event almost a year, staging the Australian Open tennis grand slam tournament from 8-21 February.

The Victorian State Government has already confirmed that all players taking part in the tournament must adhere to the two-week quarantine upon arrival in Australia to "ensure the safety of all parties".

F1 has conducted rigorous testing for COVID-19 since the delayed start to the 2020 season, ensuring all paddock personnel attending events test negative before being allowed on site.

Those attending the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix were required to remain within a biosphere on Yas Island for the entirety of the event, ensuring they did not travel to anywhere else in the city state.

Should a new date be found for the race in Australia, it would force a likely reshuffle of the calendar towards the end of the season given F1 already has a congested schedule after the summer break.

The only current vacant weekends between the Belgian Grand Prix on 29 August and the season finale in Abu Dhabi on 5 December lie on 19 September, 17 October, 7 November and 21 November, leaving little room to slot Australia back in.

Following the Bahrain Grand Prix on 28 March, F1 is due to hold the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on 11 April, before a likely return to Europe for the current TBA race on 25 April.

The emergence of a new strain of COVID-19 has led to soaring cases numbers in the UK - where seven of F1's 10 teams are based - and prompted a clampdown from many countries on flights to and from Great Britain.

The planned Formula E season opener in Santiago was cancelled last month after Chile closed its borders to the UK.

What are you in high school

There's nothing wrong with that

True story: a female friend of mine (a few years older than the rest of our group) had an interesting take on this. She looked specifically for younger guys, mostly because life expectancy is higher for women, so she saw it as a better chance she wouldn't spend most of her tail end years alone. I found it weird personally but she is now a happy mother and settled with a younger lad.

There is a twist though: his top hobbies are skydiving and motorcycling (including track). It kind of defeated the point, right?

Maybe that was Bernie secretly posting and he was disgusted by the age difference being so small :D

Also, Albon is moving to DTM for 2021 with the Red Bull team.

I imagine everything up to Monaco will be canceled or rescheduled. Monaco is the best case scenario timewise for having enough people vaccinated to even contemplate an actual crowd in the stands.

Real world scenario is more likely sometime in September for North America/Europe to have enough people vaccinated. But that assumes that we get to 70%+ vaccination rate. I'm not so sure we (the USA) are going to get there. Our European brethren might make it though. There are far too many idiots in my beloved homeland for me to have any hope of normalcy until probably spring of 2022.
