I don't think you can question Russell's talent. To out-qualify your team mate 30 times in a row is quite an achievement. Yes, Latifi is a rookie, and Kubica wasn't the driver he once was, but it's still a highly impressive stat. He deserves a chance in a bigger team, and then we can really judge his ability.

He's still a Mercedes driver though. No chance he goes there other than as test driver. If Mercedes didn't pull out of DTM I'd expect to see him there than in any other F1 team beyond Williams tbh.

Racing Point even preferred a chimeric Vettel over him even though Strulovich probably doesn't need to obey to everything Mercedes tells him or however that works.

Stewards apparently seem to be blaming Kvyat for the pile up.

Paul di Resta said during the race Kvyat was the first to throttle it so there is that.

Grid penalty for next race would be in play if the next race wasn't the Russian GP

Also he IS petty good in qualifying which probably keeps Lewis motivated. And then is conveniently slow in the race so there is never any doubt about who will be given the title.

Exactly, perfect second driver for those days when it's "Bono, these tires are gone man."

Here's a new piece of footage from the restart showing Russell was to blame for the mayhem (21:10):

if it wasn't for Mercedes we would have had 2 epic races in a row

the track is great though, should be in F1 every year

so they were saying previously that Bottas was like a Barrichello. I disagree and keep my point that he's more like Coulthard, the difference is that Hamilton is way way above than Hakkinen on skill but Bottas still believes he can beat him

but then comes the race and he puts himself where the team wants him to be

Probably a good race to miss live and watch on Channel 4 with all the red flag periods edited out then.

I did think the SC restart procedure was dangerous as fuck when Vettel/Lewis was slowing the pack down in Baku before gunning it, just to avoid a slipstream

Time for those rules to change, methinks. F1 is unique in the way they run safety car restarts, so give control back to the starter and not the guy in P1.

It's simple, isn't it? Bring back overtaking after Safety Car Line 1. Was there anything wrong with that rule in the first place?

Just thinking here. If you have to warn 60% of the competitors something is really wrong here. Either you have a field that is made of a bunch of dickheads and the standards have been lowered or you have rules that are very flawed. Or both.

Exactly, I really don't see a problem and there's no need to change anything with SC lines like people are suggesting here.

I disagree. Drivers have been being fucking around at restarts for years now. Dropping half a track behind the SC and then suddenly dropping the hammer. Its annoying and dangerous and yesterday it finally came together and led to multiple cars crashing into each other.

Yes, the drivers at the back of the pack should pay more attention. I'm not arguing that part. However, things will be a lot cleaner if the lead driver must stay within 3-5 car lengths behind the SC at all times and actually punish it when they dont.

And actually, I think some of the antics they pull already is against the current rules but the stewarts never do a fucking thing about it.

It's just that restarts were not as big or frequent part of F1 as they are in say Indycar or NASCAR. But with Safety Car periods much more frequent now, they will get the hang of it the more they do it, and we'll likely see some rules inserted here and there, such as maintaining formation till the line or something like that.

F1 isn't unique at all. Most European-style series have the same type of restart procedure in place and you don't see pile-ups in those. Yesterdays crash was caused by the people at the back trying to get a run on the cars ahead. Bottas did nothing wrong and the system doesn't need to change.
