I have the thinking of Trulli being a great 1-lap qualifier. I think he did some great qualifiying runs in the Prost when we was starting. And that Monaco pole was probably one of the greatest laps at that track.

But you can't place a guy with absolutely no race pace as one of the fastest drivers in Formula 1 history.

Trulli's problem wasn't that he had no race pace. It's that he was so good over one lap (and the Renault was so good at starts) that he was always out of position. I genuinely think he was an underrated driver - he was closer to Alonso than Fisi until Briatore got the hand grenades out. He insists he was better on slicks than grooves too, although he wasn't the only one

Not to defend the ratings, of course. But I do think he's the kind of guy that in a dominant car, in a team that supported him, he could've been a convincing world champion

Trulli just another one of many who came into F1 as "the next best thing", yet few ever lived up to the billing....

If you'd asked me in the 97 season I'd have been certain that the early 2000s would have Wurz and Trulli fighting Schumacher for titles, it really looked like they were the next big deal.

And I'm sure, in a parallel universe somewhere, they are

ricciardo schooled vettel when they were together at red bull, which doesn’t seem to be reflected in the results

Hacks like Kovalainen, Trulli and Hulkenberg make it onto that list but not Hakkinen who routinely destroyed Coulthard in qualifying? A fun but ultimately silly and meaningless article. This is about as pointless as their tire performance graphic.

Yeah, where's Häkkinen? His 1st qualifying for McLaren put him ahead of Senna. Mika was often able to make great laps like at Imola 2000, Monaco and A1-ring 1999 against Schumacher on his prime while Coulthard was nowhere to be seen.

This. Mika was, for a long time, the only driver who could approach Schumacher on single-lap pace and I think Schumacher would have been the first person to say this.

I thought Ricardo Zonta, Anthony Davidson and Heikki Kovalainen were world championship material haha

I vaguely remember an article about a guy called Marko Asmer having a test for Williams back in the mid 00's, with lines of "he's the next Senna" just because he braked a few meters later than other drivers.

Asmer was always said to be legitimately good. He just didn't get the breaks

Maybe that's why he ended up "breaking" later lololol

In all seriousness, he dominated BF3 but never got a real shot at GP2 or the World Series
