Literally everyone has to overtake everyone else about 3 times....

It's similar to Japan 2005 (random SC completely throws out strategy plans) or a wet race in the amount of overtaking it generates, I'm surprised it's not remembered as a classic with other races

Good choice imo.

that was a good race, even Da Matta was leading at some point in a consistent pace. He almost ran over the priest

I just heard about Rubens himself on a YT video. That he normally says what are the best tyres for Schummi, and he gets the second best. But this one, the tyres that he chose for himself were the best ones - they needed some laps to get to full performance and Schummi didn't like that kind of trade. So Barrichello got to use them, the rest is history.....

Ugh they are putting Valencia, now the best race in the worst track (at the time) is a classic

they should had gone with Abu Dhabi 2012, Vettel starting from the back, safety car action, Kimi gets pissed over the radio and wins

That was one of the best races of a great season (alongside Abu Dhabi and Brazil).

Spoiler:
Alonso climbing from P11 to win, Vettel retiring in the lead like in the old days, lots of action in the whole field, and Schumacher's final podium.


Having rewatched the whole 2012 season recently, it came to my mind how I forgot almost everything from that season. And there was lots of good stuff in it. I couldn't care less of Valencia in 2013, for example, because that track does suck (it kinda looks like a preview of Sochi), but 2012 is a great race indeed.

Yeah 2012 was peak F1, looking at a race like that, where every damn position was fought over by a train of cars, and you have to wonder what was so wrong with the sport back then that needed changing

Answer: nothing.

F1 was so wrong to go back chasing performance through aero, there was about 5 passes in that race that'd be the pass of the season if they happened now, and probably more passing overall in that race than the entire 2017 season

When it happened in 2003 and 2005 (Silverstone and Suzuka) it was celebrated
When it happened about 10 times in a season, it was taken for granted.

Typical f1.

I didn't take it for granted, 2011 and 2012 were the best examples of how great F1 can be. A shame that the argument "the tyres shouldn't be such an important factor on who wins at F1" prevailed. They still tried to do another special tyre in 2013 until Silvertone happened....

Nah, much better than the shitshow of 2014-2016, yeah, it would be much better to change back to aspirated engines, or any rules package than didn't make the engine such an important factor. And go for ground effect instead of what we have now. But at least now we have more than one boring grey car, with a boring engine sound, with a turtle speed cruising to the win.

And overtakes, when they happen, are actually rewarding.

2014-2016 must be the most underrated seasons in F1 history

They actually featured wheel to wheel racing for the lead.

Most of the time in any championship season, you only have 2 drivers with a shot at the title, but if those 2 drivers are in cars painted the same, apparently it makes it the most boring thing ever no matter how many times they overtake each other.

2017 was when it went wrong, we went from wheel to wheel stuff between Nico and Lewis to dirty air, pit strategy racing between Lewis and Sebastian.

Racing aside, I really don't like seasons of a team dominating and the championship battle happening between teammates.

It's too much whining on who is being given the best treatment when it's very likely the team is giving the best to provide a fair battle. In this sense, I like much more the seasons with two teams battling for the drivers' championship. Because it's more like everyone is giving their best rather than a team having to take care to provide a fair battle.

I hardly remember anything from 2014-2016. Every race was the same boring Mercedes dominated story. There was no battle, one race Hamilton won and the next it was Rosberg. The fight for the title was "intense" because if one Mercedes won, the other was probably 2nd so they were always close in the points, but each race was boring as hell. Only in 2016 Rosberg tried harder, and turned into an ass on track to be able to beat Hamilton, which sometimes resulted in an ontrack battle and some close contacts.

If F1 seasons were buildings, I'd nuke 2014 to 2016, so we have a big hole as if it never happened instead of having to have shameful memories on the pinnacle of boredom.

Apart from that, I think Mercedes is the dominating team that let its drivers compete with each other the most. Red Bull? All Vettel. Ferrari with Schumacher? Not a chance. To have a team dominating and still giving both drivers equal chances, I think we have to go back to 1996.

in 2017, Rosberg wasn't in F1 anymore. Which shows how little you remember of it yourself.

F1 should had tried to take away a bit of Mercedes domination but instead they kept the bulshit on and that's why we rather watch classic races than bothering wake up early to watch the processions of today

they are showing 2 races apparently, Estoril 1984 and Zandvoort 1985. Two fine drives by Lauda in the MP4/2

I don't remember much about Zandvoort 85, other than Prost putting a lot of pressure on Lauda in the last few laps. I do enjoy watching cars around Zandvoort, though.

Estoril 84 wasn't really a classic, other than watching Lauda come through the field and the excitement of the championship. Estoril 89 and 90 were decent races, but that defeats the purpose of a Niki Lauda tribute.

old Zandvoort had quite a scenery, looked even nicer with old advertising boards such as Vespa
