Regarding refuelling many who call for it due to increased tactical chances. But the difference isn't really big compared to nowadays.

I took 239 races (from total of 272) between 1994 and 2009 for my calculations as well as 174 races between 2010 and 2019 (from total of 198).

The refuelling era saw 77,6% of the races where 1st and 2nd placed drivers made same amount of pit stops. In the non-refuelling era the percentage is 85,6%.

I think the difference between now and then is that the final pitstop doesn't end the race like it did before

In the refuelling era, the final stint was basically "it's all over now, ease up to the finish" whereas even if you're on the same amount of stops, even a 1 lap difference in the lap you pit can have a massive bearing on the result of the race.

Yeah, and before the undercut/upercut normally had a bigger difference. Unless you are Hamilton starting at the back at Hockenheim....

Only remembered yesterday about Wehrlein getting a point. Amazing to think they scored as many points in that season as Williams did last year

So TIL Keith Jackson, who was known mostly for his college football commentary, called an F1 race, the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix:

Cool. I only recently found out that Jim Lampley, who I know from doing HBO boxing for years, was lead comms for two Indy 500s

Here's another one: NASCAR standout Mike Joy doing play-by-play for Monaco.

Speedvision's broadcast of Spa '98. It's interesting to see the juxtaposition of the Schumacher-Coulthard crash between Murray Walker's more impartial reaction to that of Derek Daly/David Hobbs, who basically jump all over Coulthard immediately.

I still wanna see the CBBC commentary of the 09 season that the BBC introduced that year

Nice idea, to try and make the sport accessible to kids, but I wonder how exactly they did that.

They had Perry McCarthy doing analysis and sketches like the safety car being a couple on holiday who had gone the wrong way. All very BBC. Still more coherent than Legard, though

And because the U.S was lucky enough to have "dueling broadcasts" at the time, here's the FOX Sports Net version with John Watson and Derek Bell:

Last week's Bring Back V10s on this was quite interesting. Not much in there we didn't already know but Dieter Gass confirmed that Trulli was on fumes a) to reduce the load on the left-rear and b) because they knew there probably wouldn't be a race

Toyota were quite often on fumes in 2005 to grab high grid positions.
