It was a misunderstanding more than anything. Coulthard said later he slowed on the racing line but there was no malice.

Not that this could convice 12yo schumifanboy me :whistling:

if Schumacher had won that one it'd be just another wet weather race with wet weather racing shenanigans but it was one of those races that make kids get into the sport with all the crashing and mayhem, plus Eddie getting his first victory

Murray Walker said multiple times during the broadcast that Damon Hill was the world champ in 1994. 8O

Yeah, I was always so angry when I heard the Flemish commentators get things wrong, mistake drivers for their teammates, or just tell wrong information. When actually, Murray, widely regarded as the best commentator of all time, got a lot wrong too. Really a LOT!

In my early days at racing forums, it was common to receive some posts about Murray's mistakes. I think I had heard about 60 of such moments before I even knew his voice.

This guy also uploaded the '82 race.

For some reason, Paul Page wouldn't stop calling Michele Alboreto "Michael".

Well, Michele is the Italian version of Michael (just like in Portuguese and Spanish we say it Miguel). I can imagine he translanted it and got stuck with the translation.

Or Michel, like Edgard de Mello use to call Schummi. Or Maicom, the brazillian sounding version of the english Michael.

When F1 was on free to air TV here, the commentator pronounced Schumacher's name the German way, so Mee-sha-yel. It always sounded wrong to me because I thought it was pronounced like in English until I head the correct way many years later.

The only time I ever heard anyone do that in English was the guy who used to do the "Transworld Sport" recaps (he also got a go at an F1 season review one year too, I'm thinking 99?)

Seemed so weird, but if I was Micheal I'd be going round the English commentators and telling them how to pronounce my name, like Coul-tard and Vet-TELL had to...

a small correction, I was replying to Soul Reaver, not calling Murray an old fool. That would be blasphemy haha

here local commentators pronounced "Mirrael Shumarrer" when Schumacher started, but then just resorted to "Mikael Schumaker" as it was easier to say and understand

some also pronounced Greg Moore differently. First was "Murr" and then in a interview he corrected saying it was just "moore" haha

Jonathan Ross did this on the 1993 season review video and it confused the hell out of me at first.

And it took U.S. commentators until 1995 to realise Villeneuve wasn't pronounced Villa noove.

Anyone else have an issue with "Eye-er-ton" vs "Air-ton" Senna. Or was that just an American thing?

What was the deal with season reviews in the UK being done by comedians for a while in the 80s and 90s? (Including Clive James here) It was almost like they didn't think anyone would watch unless there was some light comedy thrown over the top.

Actually, I think it was the other way around.

He was pronouncing it the wrong way until 1994, when he suddenly started pronouncing it "Ay-er-ton Senna" as it should be, that led to him actually getting complaints from viewers!

So he switched back to "Air-Ton" and Senna himself came up to him and said "Murray, What happened to Ay-er-ton?"

Saying that, I'm about the only person left on the "Ricky-ardo" bandwagon, and no amount of hearing it said by even the driver himself is going to change that for me!

Funny our most classic narrator, loved to say EVERY GOD DAMN GP that we should not call Kubica "Kubica", but like he, Kubica himself asked, "Kubitza".

The same one who calls Schummi Michael while asked to be "Mikael" and Ricardo "Ricardo" while Daniel asked to be "Ricciardo".

Sounds more like he, our commentator, just like to portray as a rich snob actually.
