Lewis in a Red Bull that is actually good on traffic and starting from last would be a nice thing to see

just paint the Red Bull black and make him start from pitlane every race

I expect Lewis to simply resign with Mercedes and be here for another few years but comments like that do make you wonder.

Wolff said a while back that they couldnt discus the contract due to covid and therefor not being able to talk. The rest of the world seems to do just fine using the likes of Zoom but apparently Mercedes havent come to grips with that?

There is zero reason to not sign with the team. The rest of the grid would gladly drive for travel expenses in his place yet Lewis is apparently still doubting if he should sign a new deal.

With everything going on in the world right now and him being virtually unchallenged for the last several years I can see him losing the motivation to do this another 2-3 years.

Champions very rarely lose their motivation while they're at the top.

rarely being the key word here.
The whole covid-19 situation gave a lot of people a whole new perspective on life.

At the very least there is some doubt if he wants to continue. Its been clear for long enough that Mercedes is the team to beat again this year and next year and its clear long enough that he will win the title this year and next year. Bottas and RBR have shown again that they are not match to seriously challenge him.

So a new deal should have been a slam dunk by now yet, officially, they barely are even talking.

Only examples I can think of in recent history are Prost, Mansell and Lauda. Mansell probably doesn't count because he essentially gambled on Williams keeping him for mega money and had a tantrum when they did not.

Nico also had sound family-related reasons for quitting but I don't think he will ever shake the accusations of not wanting to defend against Hamilton.

I much rather have 3-4 drivers being able to compete for wins and the title.

Verstappen in that car will just be a continuation of the current status quo and will enable a lot of Dutch people who until recently didnt give a flying fuck about F1 suddenly acting like they are the authority when it comes to F1. :yuk:

I'd like to see Lewis in a car that's only 2nd or 3rd best. He's clearly one of the best drivers that we've seen in our lifetimes, and I think we could appreciate that talent more if he had to fight harder each race.

That's like saying Leo Messi should transfer to Sheffield Wednesday and win the premier league with them to prove he's the best.

I don't see him taking an astronomical pay cut to drive the 2nd or 3rd best car in F1. He doesn't need to prove anything. No-one in their right mind would do that, none of us here would. Winning is fun, being the best is pretty awesome.

I don't disagree with you; it was more of a wish. I think it would be a treat for the fans to see Lewis have to really fight for the wins. At the moment, you get the feeling that he's not having to drive 100% - just enough to fend off Bottas. He doesn't have anything to prove. It would just be more interesting.

The only thing I disagree with is that we'd all do the same. Driving the best car in the world is fun to a point, but I think I'd personally want some competition and wheel to wheel action every race.

It's hard to walk in his shoes because none of us earn $70m a year to drive the best car in F1, so it's hard to see things from his point, but from a logical point of view, I see him going nowhere.

But the logical point of view is that he most likely would have signed up already for 2021 and possibly beyond.

Its also a logical point of view to say that most of us here would have taken that Haas seat in a heartbeat even if it meant driving at the back. Yet Hulkenberg refused it because, allegedly he didnt get enough money to his liking.

I agree its 99,9% certain he will be in that car next year and probably another 99% certainty he will be there beyond 2021 as well. But there is likely enough doubt in him if he wants to continue to not yet commit to that.

Quite sure Mercedes is waiting to see if Max gives Red Bull wings and fly away to sign him before anything

which is quite nonsense as you have the resources to renew the contract with the best driver of the past 15 years, that won almost half the titles of this period

mercedes wants a long term contract to lock in hammy for the next rules changeup. lewis probably isn't sure he want's to be in f1 that long (especially if toto decides he doesn't want to be in f1 that long). pretty sure it's that simple

If F1 were to race in places without serious political problems from the perspective of a western liberal we would not have a calendar at all. My point here, and I guess it's the same one of @

, is that the hypocrisy is annoying.

Which is also a paradox. Because having a brand like F1 raising awareness of the problem with racism is good, but it sucks to see it profiting off it while making a minimal effort to make real progress on such a matter.

I know what you're pointing out is sarcasm, but I'd like to point out

We race in China, which is committing ethnic cleansing of a minority
We race in UAE, Bahrain which essentially uses slave labour to build it's country
We race in Russia where homosexuality is illegal (I think, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, it was when I was there in 2018) and is ruled by a dictator who poisons the opposition.
We race in America which for the last 4 years has been ruled by a racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobe, who has been locking up immigrant children, who promotes anti-intellectualism and is anti-science to the point where it's destroying the earth

Yada yada yada, so on, who cares if Saudi Arabia get a race, if you think it's not fair, about 5-6 other races should get cancelled too.

Yes, so lets just have more and more races in these areas.

Great logic.

Tilke's just working within the design standards set out by the FIA and what the client wants, not his fault F1 produces terrible races at times

There are things he doesn't have to do but does anyway, like off camber corners and kinks into braking zones making passing impossible.
