Kvyat's performances have been good recently. It's a shame he didn't start the season the same way.

Several paddock people saying Perez to Red Bull is nearly done, but Kravitz is suggesting they might "share the drive" - whether that means a few FP1s for Albon or a Klien/Liuzzi situation is unclear. The latter would be dumb imo

2005 cars were good, but what i didnt like was 1 set of tyres need to go the full distance from start to finish. Then you really cant enjoy driving F1 car when it cant unlock full potential, sure it was lighter by 150kg but when you still have 70lap old tyres on, not fun at all.
Yeh with DRS back then would be better, imagine Imola then.

I don't think there was any straight long enough back then for DRS to have a massive effect.
Certainly not for Schumacher to breeze by Alonso
(The biggest full throttle section then had a massive curve in it, doubt they could even run it there)

And as we've later found out, FIA banned the wrong thing in the pitstop phase that year.
If they'd banned refueling that year for the hell of it, the racing might have been a lot better.

I agree.

But the FIA knew they needed a rule that could end Ferrari's domination. And they knew the Ferrari/Bridgestone combination was the key to success. They had to do something with the tyres.

Idiotic rule, yes. But maybe if they banned refuelling instead of tyre stops, we could be talking about MSC 8-time WDC.

I simultaneously got into new and classic F1 in 2005; mainly the old stuff, thanks to Bigears' BBC highlights I ripped from the original TBK.

Didn't have SPEED channel back then, so as far as current racing was concerned, I was stuck with what few races CBS put on tape delay. But what I got I enjoyed, and the engine sound they made is what I still consider quintessential F1 in my book.

F1 today sucks. Everyone was at the pitwall to see Alonso doing a showlap which was equal to last year race lap with 2016 Pirellis and 2005 car. A 15 year old car can beat the cars of today on a show run with tires it was never prepared for! And on the last sector Alonso wasn't even close to the guardrail in that corner where Weber got puncture in 2010 and cost Alonso the title.

Maybe get V10 back with bio-ethanol and call it green instead of that turbo-hybrid over expensive nonsense?

He was on slicks, though. In 2005 the cars weren't just on grooved tyres - they were on hard compound grooved tyres so that they could last two qualifying laps and a full race distance. It's not representative

And it still didn't look that spectacular around Abu Dhabi. Because Abu Dhabi's a really boring circuit whatever cars you send around there

Tell you what though, when you watch the lap it has that edgy-ness on braking and when turning into the corner. Not like early 2000 but those characteristics.

Driving a car like that compared to the smooth commuter cars you see on race day today is what made it thrilling.

Yeah great to see him pushing like that. So much better than the current cars in every way... (and no I wasn't one of those back then that moaned about the cars).

the twitchiness of the old cars is great to watch. the only thing you'd really need to change to get that with the current cars is to drastically reduce the wheelbase. the current wb is ridiculously long and makes the cars extremely stable (f1 may have thought it would improve following).

and downforce isn't the problem that kills racing. downforce generated over the car is what makes it impossible for cars to follow each other. reduce the downforce generated by the wings and increase the downforce created by the floor. this is what indycar has started doing, and it's part of what the upcoming changes in f1 are supposed to do as well.

i'm actually a big fan of the current engines. i'm blown away that they can produce an engine with 1,000hp AND 50% thermal efficiency! as for the sounds - the future is silent, so the sooner we embrace that idea the less likely we'll turn into grumpy old men, lol

Fwiw I remember there being plenty of complaints at the time about how the cars back then were too stable and looked like they ran on rails because of the traction control

I think just reading through here and watching what happened when Alonso unleashed the 2005 beast shows what it's about! I also think he made a good point saying you feel the car better and all the vibrations given it's only 605kg. And obviously, above all, the sounds, then echoing through the grandstands. I watched a YT video showing the start of this year's Eifel GP, from T1. At T1, you can see the red lights and the grid and yet, you don't hear anything in that video until the cars are in front of you. So sad.

Here's a better idea.

Perez, Albon and Gasly sharing the Red Bull seat while Albon, Gasly, and Kvyat share a seat at Alpha Tauri.

We're talking about RedBull's management of non-Verstappen drivers. It will be stupid.

As much as I'm excited to see Perez on the field with a competitive car, I fear for him getting in that shit-wagon of a structure (humanly speaking), coming from a close-knit team such as Force India.

they should be well aware that Perez could be a key to make Red Bull win championships again. He has the consistency, tire management and development any team could well use

Here's a better idea - all the drivers sharing all the cars

Here's an even better idea:

Red Bull buy the IP to Manor or Caterham or hell, even USF1 and run 2 more cars

Then their problems are over.

Red bull: Max and Perez

AT: Gasly and Tsonda

Team Cast Off: Albon and Kvyat
