Today’s state-of-the-art venue may be new to younger F1 fans, but Le Castellet can trace its F1 origins back to the early 1970s, when it held the first of its 14 French Grands Prix to date.

Constructed in less than a year, and with famous drivers such as Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo consulted on its 5.8km layout, the Circuit Paul Ricard – named after its sponsor – opened in April 1970, before staging its maiden F1 race – won by Jackie Stewart from local hero Francois Cevert – the following year.

The track would prove a happy hunting ground for French drivers, with Rene Arnoux winning in 1982 and Alain Prost triumphing no less than four times, including the last Grand Prix at the venue in 1990, by which time it was deemed outdated for F1 purposes.

The start of the 21st century saw a rebirth under new ownership, with the transformation of the circuit into the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track. Used (as its name suggested) exclusively for testing, its multi-configuration layout proved popular with F1 teams and set new standards in safety, pioneering the use of painted run-off areas instead of traditional gravel traps.

In 2007, the Paul Ricard HTTT was designated First centre of excellence by the FIA Institute for safety in motorsport. It opened its doors to the public again in 2009 after the construction of a new grandstand and since then has hosted several major championships.

In 2016 a deal was struck to return the French Grand Prix to the track, and prior to its 2018 revival numerous modifications have been made to both the circuit and its setting to ensure a suitably stern challenge for the drivers and an equally thrilling spectacle for race fans.

After the high expectations I had for Monaco and Montreal, I have zero expectations for this one.

So it can only get better I guess...

Well it's art, all right.

Not even Grosjean can put his car in the wall over here. And since it's impossible to follow the car in front, it's going to be 2s gaps after first lap and the safest F1 race of all times.

If it wasn't for the chicane in the backstraight, it would be very close to the old layout. Just a shame it's a coloured mess of tarmac.

I'm not even sure if the chicane will add anything to the racing. It doesn't look tight enough to be a big braking zone.

It's going to be all about track limits abuses...

the only 2 overtakes on the track will happen involving track limits and give penalties for good and clear moves

This might be the least excited I have ever been about a grand prix. Fuck this racetrack. It's everything that is wrong with modern racing.

at least Renault made a good poster for the race

this could be the most forgettable race in recent history, since it has cup matches in the same time

I'm excited for this race, if only for the reason that it's the first French GP in ages. Despite its flaws, Paul Ricard is a pretty decent track.

Is everyone just trying to reverse-jinx it so the race is good?

Good?

It's like that time when my 7yo nephew discovered MS Paint patterns, slapped them all over a page, then pasted a badly cut race car on top of it because race cars are kewl.

I'd rather have no F1 race in France if it's to go to this piece of shit TESTING track. It's easier and arguably cheaper for anyone in the Paris area to drive to Spa, or fly to Austria/Hungary/Italy/Silverstone, and sit at an actual racetrack that doesn't feel like it's poking your eyes with ice picks.

Sorry if I'm hammering on this, been a while away from the forum and I'm just getting warmed up:

STERN challenge. I know I can never be a journalist now. What kind of clueless knucklehead reads a press release like this and copies it while knowing it's complete bullshit? What stern challenge is there in targeting that white line in a parking lot?

Then you'll have all the drivers and teams talking about how it's great to be back to France, showing off on the Côte d'Azur, make a couple jokes about wine and food, praise the modern facilities, blah blah blah. Drivers will say it's a good track, and finish their half-assed interviews by the usual sentence "and we'll see what happens then". Damn this hypocritical circus is starting to make me mad beyond reasonable now. No wonder people are still all the rage about Senna, Gilles and all the past outspoken heroes several decades after their death.

Me too. Simple, yet it has the classic Renault logo in it and the French flag.

If the White part was black you could mistake it for a photo of the track...

It's the original Renault logo with colours of the French flag. It's pretty smart in an obvious way, but all art is subjective so we're all correct here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If they would skip the chicane there would at least be one really small reason to be interested in this. Now the only good thing about that race is it will make the IndyCar race right afterwards look even better.

Where are the passing spots? There are no heavy braking zones.

I just liked the poster because of the old Renault logo. Today car companies are too equal, even on their badges, is always something shiny and bland to display safety and technology but in fact they're all crap
