The softer tyre severely backfired on his intention of creating more overtakes, we had no overtakes, first time I tuned away from a race since the 2017 package came along.

Just as boring as the previous era, that had almost no real overtakes. Or battle for the lead/championship.

1. One of the worst races I've ever watched.

This belongs to the same tier of Barcelona 99

1. Conclusive proof more than ever that the 2017 extra downforce was a massive mistake

This year, the only excitement has come from random SC's in the middle of the race, forcing a change of strategy.
Because in a 1 stop race you don't have the tyre life to overcome the dirty air

I rode along with Max this race with his radio live, his engineer gave him 1 lap to attack Bottas before telling him to back off to preserve tyres outside the Mercedes dirty air

It will be exactly the same for the rest of the season, unless rain or random SC periods

What to say, it shows the state of the sport. But i live in hope you have to have some bad races to celebrete the epic one, but they become rare, every 5 or 6th race or 10th race...

1 just for start crash.

I was too busy having fun with my friends to watch it. Glad I didn't miss anything or waste time watching this shit.

I'm not sure if agree the 2017 aero package itself was a mistake. Bahrein was a good one IMO and had no SC (it had Kimi incident but anyway). Classic tracks seem to struggle to give good race too.

But, this reminds me 10 years ago, back into 2007 and 2008 that I used to hate the races and problems were similar to this - huge aerodynamics influence with the winglets, 1 stop races with almost no action after the pit stops.

3, only because I was at the race so there's stuff you don't see/hear on TV that makes the overall experience slightly more enjoyable than the snooze it would've been at home.

The Canadian GP used to be the highlight of my couple decades as a TV viewer. So many memories, and a childhood dream coming true as I sat facing the main straight and the iconic Senna corner combination. I was hyped because even last year's race produced a lot of action (at least in the mid-pack), but seriously this year was a fucking disgrace.

LOL NO!!!

2017 had more excitment than all previous era years combined. The problem is TOO much downforce, or not going Ground-effect, or too little engine HP, and crappy soft tyres.

I'm confused whether you're agreeing with me or not lol

These are all things I think too, except that 2017 just traded 2 silver cars battling wheel to wheel for a silver and red car battling mainly in qualifying and pit stops.
3 place battles were a lot better pre-2017 too

No, 2017 had a different team winning, but overall more boring racing
When people think of boring racing, they confuse dominance of one team for processional racing
I've seen plenty of 1 team fights where they go wheel to wheel and fight each other, and plenty of "close" championships that were full of dull races.

Sure, but Rosberg vs Hamilton in a grey, slow, bad sounding car aint my cup of tea.

Was nice for one year. Then the next one Rosberg just give it up, and the following year just won by making a series of 2nd place finishes.

Anyway, pre 17 was too easy to overtake, boring, post, it was too hard, also boring, except when it happens. Don't tell me you didn't like when Hamilton assumed the lead on the Spanish GP last year.

Anyway, if the tyre was one of those from the tyre war, probably would make for some great racing now. At least, much better than this hypersoft.

.

That was weird, previous to that season, any overtakes on the straight were just called "Boring DRS passes", yet Vettel and Lewis' passes in the 2017 spanish GP were seen as excellent hard fought passes for some reason, probably because the fans and media WANTED them to be and didn't talk them down

Nothing is more confusing than F1 fans calling the same action both boring and exciting based on who is doing it or pre-determined opinions on eras *shrug*

give me the "slow boring battling between grey cars" any time, because at least there was a lot more overtaking, even if every damn fan took great care to describe every single one of them as boring and easy, for some reason

Give me that any day over the majority of the races this season without random SC periods

I believe there must be a balance. Few overtakes are boring and too many are boring too.

I remember a Turkish GP where we had lots of overtaking thanks to DRS + huge straight and the race was nothing exciting. And a hard-fought overtaking for the lead does worth more than 10 overtakes for 6th place or worse.

If a huge amount of overtakes was a guarantee of great racing, we all would be watching Moto 3 and this would be the pinnacle of motorsport.

Possibly, but we are not rating every race anymore.
