to be fair, considering the current state of F1, yesterdays race was actually quite good.

Reduce the number of guys performing the pit stops, this will naturally slow down the pit stops and allow more time to spot any mistakes and prevent people getting hurt.

Why not a release system triggered when all 4 tiremen have hit a button confirming they're clear?

Pretty sure that's how it is/was, that the lights didn't come on until all 4 lights come on, maybe they got rid of it because it was too time consuming?

I confirm that's how it was, at least during last year. Source being commentators of my local network. A button on the pistol, that the mechanic presses once he's secured the wheel and the light automatically goes green when all 4 do it. It's a button, so mistakes can happen, and I'm not sure how far of a check they even do before pressing it or if it's so tight that they just press it first and think about it later (otherwise there would never be an unsafe release).

Glad to see he's all patched up and smiling now.

As a side note, I don't understand why the FOM kept the pit camera in their official highlights, which shows clearly how his leg got broken. During the race they only replayed the external angle which hides the gruesome part, should've done the same for the official video out of respect.

to avoid that kind of thing, simply just manufacture one tire that can last the whole race and ban the pitstops, 0% chance of that happening again

The fact the wheel wasn't even taken off the car tells me a simple lollipop would have easily spotted it and prevented the release. It's not like a nut was jammed and the guy was taking a split second longer than usual to fix it. The split second wasn't the difference here. This was totally avoidable under the old school.

Not 100% avoidable. I remember a Honda being released with only three wheel once with the lollipop man in charge.

So, you only remember one incident. This year in two races we've had three incidents alone. Guess the maths is pretty simple.

Unfortunately all these unsafe releases are a spin-off from the refuelling ban. Mechanics are under a much bigger pressure now especially with GPS tracking from the pitlane is king.

People would complain that lap times are F2-like slow and this isn't "real" F1 anymore

Then we get back to 2005 when we had such a rule, and it was also deemed too dangerous, especially after Kimi's last-lap crash in Nurburgring.

but that was because Michelin was doing tires that couldn't last until the end and they were using setups focused on performace rather than reliability

until 1982 races could go on without a single pitstop and nobody complained it lacked speed and the tires were crap, they just held on until the flag

A few years ago they had a decent system with wheel clips that had to be attached before the car left the stall, they also had the added advantage that should the nut come off, the clip would hold the wheel on (in theory the clip couldn't be attached if the nut wasn't done up properly) but the teams successfully lobbied the FIA to scrap them because they were slowing down their pit stops.

2 second stops adds nothing to the show, just like with Formula E and their 'system that prevents the car moving if the belts are not done up' horseshit, they should as someone else said make it three guys only doing both sides, nobody gives a crap if the stop is 2 seconds or 10.

On person per wheel is all you need. Works just fine in F2 & IndyCar.

Teams don't want more variance in race strategy. They want to run the most boring race ever. Ferrari, Mercedes and RBR all want to have a car that is the best while running at the front without a sight of anyone in the mirrors.

About my other point, it means we will have more avoidable incidents like this compared to the past. I guess we need a mechanic getting killed for something to change.

I don't think it should be too hard for a system on the wheelnuts or the wheel gun that senses the correct tightness and doesn't allow a release to happen before the sensors detect the tightness.

It can keep the current system but prevent the green light from being triggered before being sure all is well.

I just heard this is more or less how it works today. Thing is, Kimi's left rear wheelnut kept tight the whole time. So the system understood all wheels were properly attached and gave the green light.

I thought someone had to give the green light instead.

imagine if FIA appoints one official per team to give the green light on pit stops, the ammount of complaints would go to the roof

Here's a good video that goes through all what we discussed (it's a good channel overall, just a fan but he explains some obscure things like safety car deltas, undercut strategies etc... pretty well with graphics).

EDIT: Youtube comments for all they are, can also be super golden:

How about we put halos around the pit stop mechanics?
