Can't work out if I really like the disruptiveness of the black, or if I want to crack a joke about them not finishing the paint job in time.

It looks alright; I think the halo is going to be just another feature by the time the season starts. It already just makes me think of F1's take on a sprint car cage.

Its a copy paste from last years ferrari if you look closely all the wings... specially around the radiators

I thought shark fins and T-wings (though this one is so low it's pretty much a cross) were to be made illegal this year?
Looks like we'll never be free of the dick noses either.

F1 2018: ensuring the rear of the car remains as ugly as the front with the new halo.

My thoughts exactly.

This launch is fucking depressing. I will show some restraint though: this race car looks like a Martini-branded white-painted big steamy pile of dogshit :). Too bad that engine fires aren't a thing anymore in F1: I want to see it burn slowly on a remote side of a racetrack, with nothing around but helpless marshalls with only small extinguishers.

I can't see how this halo will prevent head injury if another car slices over it like we had almost with Alonso a few years ago.
What if during a bad crash, this thing breaks and parts go into the helmet?
I wonder if drivers will not be too distracted with this thing in front of them?
And it's ugly

The Alonso crash was one of the specific incidents in mind when they designed it. The load tests - reported quite heavily in the last week, actually - subject it to many times the weight of an F1 car, and it isn't allowed to break. The oblique angle test (93KN in this pic, and basically the Alonso scenario) subjects it to the equivalent weight of a bus.

It's titanium under the carbon; it isn't likely to break.

Everyone who tested it last year said you look past it, much like any other kind of framed canopy.

Yeah, IndyCar have really shown it up. It's not pretty.

I'm already getting used to it

but most people that like racing and talks about halo still believe that is a welded frame into the safety cell but actually is a reinforced frame that is part of the whole, I guess only a crash like the Bianchi one could shatter it off

Interesting thought: if you've seen the FIA video about the HALO investigation and engineering cases, they show a test they performed where they flip a cockpit upside down, and actually, the HALO itself supports the car, not the roll bar. The roll bar barely touched the ground. This gave the driver more room to escape than usually when the car is on its side.

Maybe in the near future, the roll hoop and the engine intake will be gone altogether and the HALO will just be one big cage that sustains the flip load case as well. Think a 60s car but with a roll cage.

I don't think the regulations allow it yet, but surely the teams would be dying to get rid of that roll hoop for aero reasons and get air intakes on the sides, or somewhere lower that doesn't create drag and doesn't interfere with the air flow to the rear wing.

Don't get me wrong, it's just my engineering enthusiast side talking here. It will still look like crap and I hate it if it wasn't clear already :p

so you're saying cars will look like this but with a rollcage in the middle

I still believe they'll stick winglets on halo at the very first opportunity

They're only allowed to add about 20mm around the HALO main beams, for small modifications. No big winglets allowed - thankfully the FIA saw the craziness in advance this time!

The drivers head is closer to the halo than it is the rollbar so I don't see how that's any safer in a rollover, seems like in a non-standard (ie complete sidewinding snap roll) flip where it goes frontwards or at any kind of angle like Diniz in 99, the drivers head will be more likely to touch the ground since the load will transfer from the halo to the helmet before finding the rollbar

But I guess they thought that was so unlikely as to not happen they'd ignore it

Just like how unlikely it is that anything will hit the driver in the first place I guess.... :whistling:

Didn't you watch the video? I thought you did a while ago, but it's literally covered in the video!

They literally flipped a chassis multiple times to test how the way out was affected. Like @

said, you can see how the front of it actually raises the whole chassis and clears the driver's head from the ground.

Yeah that's the test I was talking about. I think if anything, it's safer in rollovers like Warwick'93 or Diniz'99 (any time the flip occurs over a soft surface) because the HALO provides a larger contact area than the sharp hoop that tends to dig in.

I didnt think it would at the beginning, but seeing the massive loads it's designed for it will act as a proper rollcage in full support of the roll hoop.

Days of helmets scraping on the ground as the car slides on its destroyed side are over :-(
