2017 FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Circuit of the Americas
Image

f1.com wrote:
The 2012 season saw Formula One racing return to the United States for the first time since 2007 with an all-new venue in Austin, Texas. The Circuit of The Americas (COTA) is the first purpose-built F1 facility in the US designed for any and all classes of racing and was officially opened on October 21, 2012 by COTA ambassador and 1978 F1 world champion, Mario Andretti.

Its signature element is a 5.5-kilometre (3.4-mile) Grand Prix circuit, located southeast of the Texan capital, and designed by Hermann Tilke in collaboration with American architectural firm HKS.

The 20-turn, anticlockwise track, construction of which began in January 2011, draws inspiration from the best circuits around the world, as well as taking advantage of the site's natural topography to include dramatic elevation changes of up to 40 metres.

There is a steep, uphill run into the hairpin Turn One, which instantly became the venue's signature corner. Turns Three through Six look not dissimilar to Silverstone's high-speed Maggotts/Becketts; Turns 12 through 15 give a nod to Hockenheim's stadium section; and Turns 16 through 18 mirror the famous, multi-apex Turn Eight at Istanbul Park.

The grandstands, semi-permanent stands and natural seating areas enable over 120,000 fans to attend the Grand Prix, but the circuit is only one part of the multi-functional 900-acre site.

Support buildings include a medical facility, 14 executive meeting suites, a conference centre and a banquet hall, as well as an expansive outdoor live music space. Future proposed amenities include a driving/riding experience, a motorsports driving club, kart track, grand plaza event centre and tower, and a trackside recreational vehicle park.

Watching a race live at 6 PM on a sunday...that's pretty much all I'm looking forward for this race.

Oh, and go Hartley!

Good chance it'll be a suckfest but you never know. I think I've seen one decent race at this circuit.

The Renault and toro rosso driver changes are the most interesting things. That and also to see how low Ferrari can go each weekend.

I like Hartley

I like this track.

Congratulations x driver that won't win for winning the 2017 United States GP
(this time, I'll edit it AFTER the race so I can be fucking right on the money for once)

The smart money is on Hamilton, of course. A shame, because at least Rosberg managed to make the race interesting until he ran out of luck/skill/weather/those special parts that Mercedes were DEFINITELY only putting on his car.

I just hope that Ferrari can challenge Mercedes in Austin.

Even if Hamilton wins the title, I'd like too see it go down to the last race.

That's too long. F1 cars would run out of revs / gears long before that. If you'd have said "Make the straight which ends at turn 12 end at turn 15" then I'd have agreed. The 12-15 section is utterly pointless. As are turns 4 and 5, instead turn 4 could be a long gradual curve into turn 6.

I'm pretty sure that even with fixed gear ratios, they could modify the final gear ratio to manage a straight that long?

I don't think that'd be an issue. They'd exit the hairpin at a much lower acceleration, but that's it.

This track can't put on a exciting race with 4 wheels if it tried.

Why would you want to remove the only section of the track that produces some wheel to wheel racing?

I'd change the last two corners, make that part to what Turkey had from backstraight to the turn 20.

The second DRS detection point is literally right after the worst sort of corner that causes the car behind to twitch and slide and drop back...

Those last three corners at Istanbul Park felt awkward and unnatural, there was little flow to them. Much like a 1980's American F1 street circuit. The same is true of the turn 12-15 section at COTA.

thought the cars have a rev limiter that is lower from the edge of kaputt and because of that would race in a pack short before braking zone

The current engines are limited to 15k RPM, but due to the fuel flow limit they don't rev anywhere near that mark.

IIRC this was a Tilke special, intended to unsettle the cars with the constant changes of direction and braking. Can't see it working this year.

And with engines per season limits, they don't rev even to that theoretical point, especially now that oil burning is limited.

I am an automotive engineer and car enthusiast, not a particulary skilled one on engineering nor handcraftship. But I can tell you that all these rules related to fuel flow limit, fuel capacity, fuel temperature, engine amount, engine max rev and oil rules, all just tells that people who made these rules are not the ones that should be making them. It's absolutely impossible to make an engine that is just within all of those rules. They're all far off from them and that's because the rules are written by bunch of morons! But wait, there's more! Let's freeze the development for five years! :slaphead:
