Baku City Circuit

f1.com wrote:
The 2016 season saw Azerbaijan become the latest addition to the Formula One calendar, with capital city Baku playing host to the fastest street circuit in Formula One racing, on a layout designed by renowned F1 track architect Hermann Tilke.

“Our brief to Tilke Engineering was simple - create a circuit that is unique, one that will help the Grand Prix in Baku quickly establish itself as one of the most exciting, thrilling venues on the F1 calendar, and one that the fans and teams alike are excited about,” said Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sport.

“Most importantly, we wanted a track that would showcase the best of Baku, our capital city, and I am delighted that the circuit has achieved exactly that aim.”

Tilke's design married technical sectors with extreme straights to create a stunning circuit that also thrives on Baku's very attractive urban atmosphere and its great combination of history and 21st century style. The historic city centre, the beautiful seaside promenade and the impressive government house all combine to provide the perfect backdrop for the spectacular track.

“Obviously street circuits present a number of challenges, in terms of circuit design, but we have been able to incorporate some unique features that will provide the teams and fans with fascinating racing,” he comments.

“For example, the extremely narrow uphill section at the old town wall rewards pinpoint accuracy and courage, while the 2.2 kilometres along the promenade sees the cars running flat out at very high top speeds - an incredible spectacle for the race fans on track and the viewers at home.”

I love this track.

I was about to whinge about the DRS activation zone being too far along the straight and then I realised that this is Azerbaijan and that the zone on that track map is probably a kilometer long.

Last year's race was distinctly ho-hum if I remember correctly.

Although the race wasn't amazing last year, I thought the track was good. Very fast for a street circuit, with some challenging narrow sections, and a lot of difficult braking zones. We saw loads of mistakes and incidents in practice and qualifying, as well as a wild GP2 race. Yet everyone on F1's social media pages seems to hate the track. *shrugs*

It would be nice if there was a second DRS detection zone, so that anyone overtaken in the first zone could attempt to take the place back again.

I hope there's a thousand feet of runoff at the end of the main straight.

+1

I really like the track. I think it was hampered by last years boring race, but that was due to many external factors. I'm looking forward to this race :)

I should clarify that I do love the track and its high speed nature.

And yes, moar clumsy mistakes from top drivers!

I think if you're a new track and your first race is dull, you're screwed. People will forever remember it as the place nothing happened first time out and not give it a chance over the balance of the first 3 years or so.

Last year was unquestionably the worst race of the year but the track I don't mind, It's probably the closest we've got to old Hockenheim with the long straights.

I like the flat out straight, but like the Belgrave Middleway section at the Birmingham Superprix. But it doesn't work with the current cars. Remember Valencia was dire until Alonso put in a famous victory in his Ferrari.

I think the race is probably good, or average, or maybe even bad.
If the race isn't good, it's either average or bad. If it isn't average, it's either good or bad. If it isn't bad, it's either good or average.

How many tracks' first races in the modern era have been anything other than dull? I can't recall any in the last 10 years. Sochi, India, Valencia, pretty much every circuit back to Bahrain was deemed worst circuit ever when it debuted, and then maybe 5 years down the line some of them start producing quality races.

this track isn't too bad - it has some elevation and faster corners

I actually hadn't even really looked at this circuit until today.

I like the second-last corner the most (it might be one of the wildest corners on a current F1 track).

I also fear that at some point there will be a massive crash when somebody clips the inside wall which is right next to the apex of the corner, and gets fired into the wall on the other side of the track. That turn is like turn 8 at the current Adelaide circuit or turn 2 at Macau, there is no room for error and it's a fast corner, they're doing about 270 km/h through there in an F1 car going by a Vettel onboard from last year.

Last year they were scared after all the qualy mistakes and mostly because of that GP2 race. So this year will probably be much better. Also, we need to have a faster car behind a slower one, otherwise it will be just a parade....
