I Enjoyed that.

Wasn't as crazy as I was expecting at the start but think we got some good racing & some really good overtaking.

They got rid of it for this year.

its considered unsporting and unsafe across all of motorsport. they enacted it as an official rule last year because max was ignoring an understood rule that all the experienced drivers respect

Ricciardo & Perez have both been handed a reprimand for missing the pre-race anthem on the grid.

Thank god they pay attention to these atrocities. Can't have drivers miss the national anthem. How dare they!

How in the hell didn't Vettel get some kind of penalty for his grid box issue? He was half a car length out of it. Whats the point of having the box then? I thought that would have been a slam dunk 5 second penalty.

That's what I was thinking. I'm glad he wasn't penalised as the penalty wouldn't have fit the crime. In fact I'm glad various incidents went unpunished today, it's better if drivers don't get punished for theevery contact or minor skirmish. Although the reprimand for being late for the national anthems is just laughable.

You are probably right there Scotty otherwise the grid will be all over the shop. Will be interesting to see if a race directive will be issued next race, if not then presumably the practice will still be allowed? Will actually be beneficial for those on the inside grid.

Nope. According to Alex Wurz there was an incident last year where one car was (like Vettel) positioned a bit outside its start box. In the following drivers briefing Charlie clarified, that this was acceptable, therefore setting a precedent. Vettel used it to avoid the rubber on his starting box. However, im curious if it will catch on and we'll have messy grids from now on since Charlie said it was legal.

I think it's a slippery slope. After all, where do you draw the line? Half the car inside the start box? Just two tires? Just one?

I remember seeing the start procedure for 1978 italian gp (the one where Ronnie Peterson had his fatal wreck)

cars didn't even stopped at the grid, they were just rolling slowly and then full throttle

That is why there's a standardised starting procedure, with a professional race director overseeing the start (Charlie Whiting)

funny you mention him, as one of the cars he used to take care at the time started that race on the front row

EDIT: oops my bad, Lauda started 4th, but anyway after that it was mandatory to have a flagman on the back of the grid to allow the red lights
