Yea bummed Kubica is out. I know this is F1 we're talking about, but I think he deserved a second chance.

another win-win situation for Williams. A driver with money that cannot bother the rich kid on the other seat

Kubica would have been bringing money as well. I don't think it's a question of whose bank balance has more zeroes.

From the limited data that is available, Sirotkin did a very respectable job at the test. Maybe he was genuinely faster than Kubica.

Or maybe there's been a snafu over the insurance - how much of the payout Kubica would have to give back and whether he could afford to.

----------

Charles Leclerc will use #16 for his F1 career.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

What was all this "Martini wants a driver over 25" nonsense some people were posting here then?

I was laughing at those posts obviously since the age limit is 21 but whatever.

There is a law in some countries (the UK being one of them) that alcohol cannot be marketed by people under the age of 25. So Martini could not have either Stroll or Sirotkin doing any sort of PR work in these countries where the law applies.

The obvious effect of this is that the value of their sponsorship is worth less, and they will probably be paying less as a result.

I will again quote Paddy Lowe on the issue;

Quote:
"There are some issues around advertising and Martini, but if it came to it I'm sure Martini will understand the importance, if that's what we were to choose, to have the best line-up for racing rather than for advertising.

"We'll cross that bridge if we need to. Age is not a factor in our primary objective, which is to pick the best line-up."

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/13256 ... f1-journey

This is one reason why the size of the chequebook could be important - if there is a reduction in the value of Martini's sponsorship then this will need to be balanced by sponsorship from somewhere else.

EDIT: There is an industry-wide agreement that Martini is part of. Good post on Atlas here explaining it -

Its not about countries having limits. Its about the industry self-limitations.

To ensure that there is no doubt about alcohol products being advertised or promoted by any person who is below the legally required age, alcohol producers are bound by a lot of self-regulation requiring them not to use the imagery of people under 25 years of age in their marketing and promotion. Martini is a brand of Bacardi Limited which is a member of Distilled Spirits Council of the United States and observes DISCUS Code of Responsible Practices for beverage alcohol advertising and marketing, that among other things states that:

Quote:
Beverage alcohol products should not be advertised or promoted by any person who is below the legal purchase age or who is made to appear to be below the legal purchase age. To help ensure that individuals in beverage alcohol advertising are and appear to be above the legal purchase age, models and actors employed should be a minimum of 25 years old, substantiated by proper identification.

That's the reason when Martini became title partner of Williams Racing they insisted that at least one of the drivers has to be over 25 years of age. If both drivers were younger than that, they wouldn't even be able to use the actual racing footage of the car they sponsor.

EDIT 2: Apparently it is a law in the UK as well as the above. https://www.asa.org.uk/advice-online/al ... r-25s.html

I can understand where they are coming from with that law...but it is just so fucking stupid. The legal age is the fucking legal age. If someone is over the legal age, then they are over the legal age. If they are worried about "the children" then raise the God damn drinking age. You then have the absurd situation where someone might be almost 7 or 9 years!! over the limit but they are deemed to young to be promoting drinking, despite nearing a decade over the legal limit????

I'll say it again...raise the God damn limit then!!!!!

I just don't get why it's 1 driver that has to be at least 25 and not both.

Sky said a while back one of the options was that PdR would do the promo work in Countries where Lance was too young if the other driver was under 25 also.

well they use effects to recreate actors that passed away during movie productions, wouldn't be that difficult for a 30 second spot featuring Gary Coleman sipping Martini

Would be stupidly expensive. Cost the producers of Gladiator $25m to replace an actor who died during principal shooting.

The Gladiator is 17 years old. Technology advanced since then. Still would be an expensive feat but, depending on the length of film needed, not that expensive.

it's also expensive to sponsor a mediocre F1 team. If it was Brabham that in the 70's got victories here and there is reasonable, but Williams nowadays is meh

Good god what a joke. And they'll still take compounds to races without any difference between them and you'll still be able to run nearly an entire race on hypersofts.

What a surprise.

I'm as disappointed with the Sirotkin news, as I was a year ago when Bottas was announced at Mercedes.
