Getting a bit of racing experience before getting in the STR then.

Well as long as it does not hinder his chances for a STR drive, he certainly won't be able to look any good driving that heap.

Same was said about Minardi, but Alonso, Fisi, Trulli all used it. The HRT is certainly no worse than the Minardis.

Oh, it is. At least Minardi weren't far off the pace of the established teams, sometimes even getting ahead of them. All HRT can hope for is a race against the Virgin cars.

There were plenty of times when the Minardi's couldn't fight with the next car ahead. For instance, Alonso took a terribly underfunded car and worked wonders with it.

Didn't see that one coming

edit: Some words from the man himself

And after a few abortive attempts at Valencia & Le Mans, Webber's learning to fly

I agree that Alonso worked wonders with that car. He'd sometimes sneak ahead of the Arrows and Prost cars on the grid. But what can Ricciardo do with the HRT? Even if he's amazing, he won't mingle with Williams and Toro Rosso. Probably not even Lotus. I'd compare Minardi to Lotus. Virgin and HRT are still a long step below that, in my opinion. You only need to look at some of Alonso's qualifying times in 2001. Just over 3 seconds off pole in Monaco, under 4 seconds in Suzuka... HRT are looking at 7 or 8 seconds.

We can only really compare him to his team mate, and that's still difficult because the "new" teams still have a lot of issues with their cars and it's difficult to understand whether one driver is clearly better. For example, D'Ambrosio has been quicker than Glock plenty of times, but that's probably due to issues with Glock's car. (Not that Jerome has been all that bad).

I'd agree with that. HRT are only inside of 107% because Q1 is slower than Q3. Prior to 2003, 107% was actually 107% of pole time and Minardi were usually inside of it. They were the slowest team, but not excessively so.

And Tata sponsorship of Karthikeyan can't have been worth that much if Red Bull is willing to buy it out.

More HRT news: Kolles is stepping aside as part of a team reshuffle, with the Carabante family taking greater control

HRT confirms the Ricciardo move

They don't state who he replaces though. Apparently Liuzzi was on an 8-10 race contract where he would be retained if HRT was 10th in the WCC and they aren't. Maybe it'll be Dan & Narain...

Minardi had also been in F1 since '85, HRT are still new with no where near the resources even midfield teams have. They've got to test new parts at the grand prix's as well, they can't ask Ferrari if they could test at their track. Pre-season testing is more important then ever and HRT are paying for not being ready in time.

From the HRT website

Quote:
Daniel Ricciardo joins Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi as official drivers of the Spanish Formula 1 team, Hispania Racing.

José Ramón Carabante, Chairman of Hispania Racing: “This agreement is a reward for all the hard work Hispania Racing has shown since we started in Formula 1 last year. We’re proud that the Formula 1 World Champion team has trusted us in their effort of developing their drivers. Let’s hope that this is just the start of a fruitful relationship”.

Colin Kolles, Hispania Racing Team Principal: “I’m happy to welcome Daniel to the team; I’m glad the Team managed to conclude this deal together with Dr. Helmut Marko who deserves my personal respect".

Daniel Ricciardo: “It’s a dream come true for me – for the first time on an F1 starting grid! I had to pinch myself a couple of times to be sure that it’s real. I’m excited and can hardly wait to drive at Silverstone. It’s a new challenge, a new experience, a new team, but I’m ready and will give of my best in any event".

So maybe a rotation?

Daniel will do the remainer of the season, except India where Narain will return. Red Bull want to compare Daniel and Vitantonio to see how Daniel fares in a race situation.

Theory is if he goes well, expect a STR seat or if he goes brilliantly, a Red Bull seat.

Joe Saward suggests that Webber is off to Ferrari, meaning that Red Bull want Ricciardo up to speed...

The last two years all F1 qualifications and races I watch on the BBC.
A few times I check on RTL7 but 4/5 times they're on commercials.

Let's see what this Daniel Ricciardo can do with the HRT then.

Wouldn't be surprised to not see him back in F1.

FIA announces on Tuesday that F1 will switch to V6 engine in 2014.

Porsche announces today they'll enter Le Mans with LMP1 program in 2014.

Does this bring Audi and F1 back into play for 2014?

Wow quite surprised by the Ricciardo news. It's great hes in F1 although in the worst car so he won't be able to do much. But this is just more experience so that's good.

Wonder if this news means STR is being sold on and HRT would become, er, Toro Rojas? :p
