I think it makes Vettel and Red Bull's title achievements all the more extraordinary. We're in an era where the top 5 or 6 cars are frequently separated by tenths rather than seconds. Yet they've managed to win three in a row. I'd also argue that the quality of the field is higher than it was ten years ago as well.

It would be nice if there could be some testing, but a return to endless thousands of miles should never happen in my opinion. I don't buy the "we need more track time moan moan moan" argument when the teams then spend the first 30 minutes of FP1 sat around in the garage.

That's a very good point Phil, and lets not forget that in two of those seasons Vettel and Red Bull came from back from a big points deficit to win the drivers title.

And while I'm defending Red Bull I must also point out that I'm far from a Red Bull fan.

I think something that makes the current domination by Red Bull easier is that the racing behind them is good. Even when Vettel runs off into the distance, we usually get a fantastic race behind him. In the Ferrari days nothing ever happened.. Hungary and Magny Cours often went with Schumacher winning and literally nothing else happening. The current excitment throughout the whole field makes it easier to take it when one team constantly wins.

And like has been said, Red Bull don't clearly win every week - they have to fight for it.

Agreed, they break down. They don't have that reliability Ferrari had.

Red Bull only dominated part of last season too.

Yeah. Although I'd have no objections if Korea and India fell off the F1 calendar...

Reliability was their weakness at times, although frequently that's been Renault's fault. But then again, there's problem so much behind-the-scenes that we never know who to blame for unreliability. Even though we've seen problems, Webber went from Singapore 09 > Austin 12 without a mechanically induced retirement.

This year we should hear some comical quotes coming out of the Merc garage, Lauda loves giving an opinion on everything and Hami will be dogged all year by the press asking about his travels on the "love Plane".

It is like ellis mentioned, Ferrari's dominant period was during a time of completely different rules which allowed then to test 24x7, then there was the ethical behavior of a few individuals... Austria both in 2001 and 2002 was made to look bad thanks to Rubens and the very public way he dealt with the team orders. In addition during their dominant period, 2002 and 2004 especially, Ferrari really had no competition. Whereas 2010 through 2012 have been exciting and Red Bull have had multiple credible competitors.

No comparison really. Ferrari's period was annoying, Red Bull's exciting.

In fact I agree totally with you. The years Ferrari dominated were certainly the worst F1 has ever seen in terms of competition. The fact is the "sport" stood aside during those years and fortunately rules were changed. And of course that's very different of what we've watched in the latter years, specially 2012.

But in statistical terms, we need other champions, I mean we need something to reflect the diversity of possibilities and competitiveness that we have seen. I have nothing against Vettel or Red Bull themselves, but I hope 2013 marks the end of their dominance...I believe something is gonna happen between Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Lotus.

Changing subjet, what will be Vettel's new nickname for the 2013 car? Prince's purple rain this time?

Red Bull goes for tilkedroms, with all flat course and aerodynamic based turns, main cause of the end of the season dominance

I remember Hungary 2004 as the race where the most exciting part was Ross Brawn eating his banana. Some of those races back then were so incredibly boring. We've got it really good right now, with or without Red Bull (mostly Vettel) domination.

Perhaps the nickname should be Christian Horner as Red Bull... splash of purple... sounds like a phalic description of him.

And I think one of the Japanese cars during the Japanese Grand Prix of 1977 also had pink on the cars.

To me car looks not good. But for sure car will change before 1st race. But as always Mercedes will develop the car till Spanish GP when they will bring big update and then they stop, like every year. And they wan to win Championships!!!! Come on, you wont fool me. They might have great engines and drivers but the rest is far from good. To me if HAM gets a podium this year i would be happy. But honestly im not expecting anything at MGP. Just the usual 6th,7th,8th,9th,10th....places

He clinched the 2002 WDC at Magny Cours in July with six races left in the season. I believe Mansell is the only other driver that has won a WDC with at least five races left in the season.
