Well they need to attract this market as they're throwing money at the likes of One Direction.

I hate it, personally. One team should just build a car totally suited to Abu Dhabi and take 86 points :p

This is pretty much what Red Bull already do - more high downforce circuits with fast corners on the calendar so they just build a car that's suited to them. In the past, we had a lot more of a variety of circuits which made domination more difficult. Now every circuit is designed around this idea of a "compromised setup", meaning they're mostly fairly similar in nature, apart from the odd exception. It just so happens that 1) Red Bull have that nailed, and 2) most of them are towards the end of the season, which explains why they has been so dominant in every second half of the season for the last few years

I know there's a different culture in the US, but can you imagine if the FA decided that the Premier League should be decided by a one-off final held in Qatar? This is pretty much the equivalent. Hopefully as with the medals, they'll be forced to reconsider, but usually there ends up being some kind of compromise at the end of it, so it's fair to say that the points system will change in some way, even if it's more points for the last five races or something

I agree - although in 2013 Vettel will have wrapped it up. By my calculations, 2003 (Raikkonen), 2008 (Massa) and 2012 (Alonso) would be champions under the new system

They're trying to fix problems, but they're fixing the wrong problems and not addressing the real ones.

I think a more interesting question is how many of the championships would still have been open going into the final round - or indeed, how many of them wouldn't have been. 2001, 2002 and 2004 would have been sealed anyway

Could be worse, remember Bernie's idea of medals?

I wonder if Abu Dhabi is paying double the race fee... they have the money.

Now we wait to see which drivers choose which numbers. They should filter that idea down to GP2 & GP3.

F1 teams pay their entry fee based on points scored in the previous season so double points for Abu Dhabi means more money for the entry fee...

So how will this work in there's a tie? Will a win be worth 2 wins? What about for Caterham and Marussia if they don't score any points again?

Finally!

A win is a win, so it'll go down to second places, thirds etc.

Tenth still decided by best results.

As long as the budget cap is reasonable (something in the region of $100m), then it's fine. Regulating it will be the hardest aspect as companies are created, what about the automotive side, young driver schemes, salaries, marketing, travel etc etc.

I suppose the good thing is literally everyone I've read thinks it's a ridiculous idea, which is even more unanimous than the verdict on the medals system. They may have no choice but to turn back on this if they're getting slated by the media in particular - I see Adam Cooper and the Autosport crew have already come out against it, and Saward no doubt will too

But as I said, that still may mean a compromise of some kind

I've done a few conversions in the past looking at F1 with a Chase. Gerhard Berger would've been a double world champion and Alonso would've won in 2008

Autosport verdict raises some good points:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111800

I can only hope the backlash is so vast that they have no option but to retract this idea.

It's a shame, because three of the four decisions today were good.

I'm guessing the double-points is to artificially create a last round decider. But is it really needed? The old cliche is that a title is won over the course of a season.

Last round deciders per decade...

1980's = 6 - 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986 (60%)
1990's = 5 - 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 (50%)
2000's = 4 - 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 (40%)
2010's = 2 - 2010, 2012 (50% so far)

These stats show that F1 is in reasonable state when it comes to setting up last round deciders. The blips in these numbers are the domination that some teams achieve during certain periods - McLaren, 1988-1991. Williams, 1992 and 1993. Ferrari, 2000-2002 and 2004. Red Bull, 2011 and 2013.

Lots of titles in past history have also been won in the penultimate race... 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 2000, 2005 and 2009. That's a decently fair record for F1. Why manipulate for the final round, when it will only diminish the rest of the season?

Plus the massive technical changes next year means that Abu Dhabi could feature a litany of grid penalties.

This is the most united I've ever seen F1 fans against a rule change. Even some of the stupid ones (medals) have had some in support. This is 100% against it.

WTF is with the points system 2014????? Double for last race, you gotta be kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In one race they get 10, next 25, and next 5 pts for winner. OMFG F1 is completley heading to self destruction!!!

If Seb has next year 400 pts before the last race and 2nd place driver 200, im sure they will give the winner 250 for last race!!!!This is really getting out of control. First the ugly cars, tramac runn off areas and now the points system.

Its stupid, who the fuck makes these ideas??? Isnt it bad enough that drivers get penalties for overtakings or driving over a line? F...

Missed among this is that there will be a three day test next week
http://www.f1zone.net/news/six-teams-to ... eek/21416/

All 11 teams were invited, but only those six chose to come. Presumably, the others are too poor.

Would be hilarious if Vettel would win the championship next year only because he benifits from the double points at the last year :D

FIA should subsidize the tests for smaller teams, give some equality

not giving money all the way, but help with structural costs
