For me I don't need them to be putting their life on the line. If you could reasonably have died you shouldn't have done it (talking modern f1 here). But their race on the line, yes. This is more what we have in f1 . It's very safe today but go wheel to wheel and you risk your race. Closed wheel racing much less so I guess.

Bravery in racing is not exclusive to open wheelers, but F1 to me is an open wheel formula.

If they turn F1 into closed wheel racing, whats the point of keeping the lower series open wheel?

They put their life on the line simply by stepping in the car. It's the nature of the game and as much as most people would like to think otherwise, deep down, that risk is an attraction to not just F1, but all motorsports. Some are more dangerous than others, but none are devoid of the risk. That's why we're on this side of the catch fence and they're in the seats. It's why we root for our hero's in the first place. They are doing something that most of us only wish we could do and in doing it, take us along for the ride when they triumph or fail.

I prefer open wheels but for me it's the circuits. Going through Eau Rouge or Ascari perfectly is a far greater skill than some of the newer circuits with acres of run-off (albeit, old circuits have been neutered to an extent). For me, standing on the exit of Ascari at Monza was a greater buzz than Farm at Silverstone because of the greater risks if a driver got it wrong.

I don't think wanting bravery means you're more of an F1 fan because judging by the scale and result of accidents, stepping into a Le Mans car is far more dangerous. But equally, with open wheelers, Formula 1 & its support series have made huge safety steps but have also been fortunate with some accidents - a flip at the wrong place and the sport changes forever.

Hulkenberg confirmed at Force India

I'm not claiming f1 is not dangerous, but it is very controlled with excellent safety regs. The discussion was on would close wheels change f1,specifically with regards to danger and excitement and how we feel about that. My point should be taken to reflect that alone.
I'm not saying closed wheel racing is totally safe, but if two f1 cars come together side by side compared to two touring cars can we agree the chances of a accident that removes the car from the race is higher in f1?if I'm wrong please correct me.
It's the speed, the precision and the idea that if you get it wrong your race is over that's exciting.

I guess FI will have a decent car next year as they've been developing it for quite a while?

I'm just glad Hulkenberg has managed to secure a seat for 2014. The prospect of him sitting on the sidelines (in addition to being overlooked by the top teams) was absurd.

In theory, considering their partnership with Mercedes. I also think they properly stopped developing their car around July, so it's been all focus on 2014.

But they're not suddenly going to be propelled into fighting for championships or even wins (perhaps podiums) unless Mercedes and McLaren totally drop the ball with their chassis. It'll be more of the same, which in itself isn't a problem but is a bit meh.

As much as I like Grosjean, it'd be sweet if Hulkenberg cruised past the Lotus drivers regularly.

We gotta applaud Force India and Mallya. The only midfield team that still selects drivers on the base of talent (please don't make my words useless by signing Chilton).

Best christmas present for Nico. Fully deserved. FI should put Perez alongside him and finally dump Sutil.

Safer to say Di Resta is off to Indycar then?

Trying to cruise past Maldonado can get risky, maybe jump him in the pit stops for safety :P

I guess he's off to another series, then?! That claim of him earlier in the season, that he had already signed with a team but couldn't tell which, was just a bluff, I'm guessing right now

Sauber doesn't need a, merely good, driver like him who doesn't take huge loads of money with him into the team. They will certainly pick less talented drivers but with substantial cash behind.

Sutil, imo, will probably go to DTM, as AFDC, or be another "F1 refugee" in Indycar.

Hulkenberg really needs to get a better manager. His move to Sauber this year was him chasing results to attract a drive to a major team (past performance is no guarentee of future success) but the early Sauber turning out to be a Turkey did him more harm than good. Then with 2 major drives up for grabs he fails to land either of them, and now jumps ship back into his old drive.

His manager should have at least landed one of those drives, or told him to stay put at FI and not to chase tales in going to Sauber. I feel that if he stayed at FI he would have been sitting in a Ferrari by now.

Yes, when taken in that context alone, we certainly can agree.
