In 1996 there was a Thursday acclimatization session, I'm wondering if that was the last time that session was used at a new F1 track?

There was an extra practice session before the first weekend at the then new A1 Ring in 1997:

Quote:
Thursday 18th September 1997

Today's extra day of free practice for the Austrian Grand Prix was organised to allow teams and drivers to acquaint themselves with this entirely revised circuit. Set among the wooded mountains of the Styria region of central Austria, the A-1 Ring provides a beautiful setting for the weekend's event and the undulating nature of the track offers spectators an excellent view of the action. After their first taste of the new layout, the opinions of the drivers seemed to be divided.

With the F1 circus returning to the Zeltweg circuit for the first time since 1987 and after extensive modifications of the lay-out, the Formula 1 teams had two extra one hour practice sessions today, with 30 laps and two new sets of tyres allowed per driver.

What teams will improve vs. last year and what teams will get worse vs. last year?

Discuss.

It will largely be the same only with Ferrari slightly better and maybe rivaling Red Bull for best of the rest

And Mclaren obviously poor to begin with but by seasons end may start to show flashes of what they can achieve in 2016, just like their other bad seasons in 2009/2004

I have a feeling Red Bull isn't what it used to be. Newey reportedly wasn't as involved with the car, they lost other designers I think as well. No longer have their star driver Vettel.

I hope I'm wrong though, really pulling for Ricciardo.

Oh and I hope Williams are still 2nd best.

Red Bull is getting ready to be sold to VAG, if that comes to happen

Lotus should improve because of the Mercedes engine.

Van Der Garde case is going on right now.

I don't see how this can end well for VdG. Let's say that the Aussie court rules in his favour, then what? Sauber will file an appeal and the hearing won't be before the GP weekend begins.

If he was being smart(er) he'd be suing for substantial damages.

I'll assume his lawyers are doing the thinking part for him. But very curious what comes out of it...

The original court (I forget the country) he filed at ruled in his favour. Yet there's been no change in his status within Sauber following that ruling. Why I wonder? Plus we've only heard (and keep hearing) his side of the story. Sauber's lawyers will know what they are doing.

The thing is, there's still a Manor seat available. Maybe there is a 2+2=?? considering this situation here?

The twitter feed is most entertaining: "@SauberF1Team lawyer says van der Garde hasn't practised in new Ferrari. Would be 'reckless & dangerous' to allow him to drive."

Ferrari? Don't think Nasr nor Marcus have driven that

That's what I absolutely love about Melbourne. You can pay a General Admission ticket and be about 5 meters away from the cars at multiple parts of the track. Last time I went, paid $30 bucks for a student concession ticket for the whole day Friday, could wander the entire track and be standing withing spitting distance of the cars. I loved to watch from the enterance to turn 3, and the chicane at turns 6-7. One of my biggest regrets in life is that in 2001 I was watching at turn 6-7 for ages, then left and less that 30 seconds later Schumi had his big roll. I was in a prime spot to see it to. Man was I pissed. Plus there is heaps of track action ( at least there was ) unlike many of the other tracks on the calander.

Yeah, there are good viewing spots all round the track for a GA ticket. I always like Turn 5 outside myself.

I was sitting outside of T9 when there was that big V8 pileup last year.

I've been to the Gp for the last few years but wont be able to make it there this year. I always liked the viewing section for General admission, where turns 11 & 12 can be seen. Such a great event to attend & all the classes that participate over the weekend make it great value.
