My favourite mid-season driver change in ages. There's something very 80s about this

I really hope Lotterer does well (given the circumstances).

He has won a lower tier series (Super Formula 2011). Grants someone an automatic license (same as winning GP3, GP2, British/Euro F3, WSBR 2.0)

Don't superlicenses have to be renewed every few years?

Super License isn't a problem. WEC Champion, Le Mans winner, Nippon winner and runner up. No reason why he'd not be given one.

Is that in keeping with the 80's theme or did you just do a horrible job of comparing sportscar drivers?

Calling Super Formula "lower tier" is an even bigger insult to Indycar. IIRC, they are the 2nd fastest racing cars in the world (after F1). Correct me if I'm wrong plz.

I'm more worried for Ericsson than for Lotterer TBH. Lotterer is not there to prove himself, why would he do that? He is there to give feedback to the team. He's been a works driver in several series for Toyota and now most recently for Audi. Caterham is in such bad shape it isn't even funny, they have to think outside the box here. Ericsson contract is too watertight, so they ditch Koba for one single race for another driver, on a very demanding (excellent test) circuit, who has driven more miles at Spa than any other driver on the grid probably.

Why the hell not?

In this context, they are all lower tier because they aren't F1.

Ericsson needn't worry. He clearly has the money as kobay went.

It's Ericsson's reputation that's on stake now more than ever (not that I've ever thought highly of him).

Huge fan of Lotterer (hey, he lived in Nivelles for 18 years, so I see him as partly Belgian :p), but Caterham is so...shit :(

32 is a bit late to make your debut in F1 these days. And the move just seems so pointless. Next week they'll put Paffett in the Force India or something. He tried when he was young but failed, what is there to gain by trying now in the slowest team?

Hope it doesn't turn out in a disaster.
He is indeed a fantastic driver, but to jump into a F1 car without experience last 12 years in it,is just insane. He isn't here to impress, the expectations are not high,so he can make something out of it. And he knows Spa very good. But the problem is-THE CAR

so lotterer is really going to race?

remember one german driver tied with a german sportscar team that made his debut in a green car at spa

That other German only lasted a few meters before the car failed
Allthough he was a good bit younger and went on to have a rather decent career in F1 :p

tbh, it will be a bit like placing Badoer in the Ferrari a few years ago.

Indycars? Faster I'd say. What's the average speed at Monza? 200mph?
