If Russell outruns Bottas, he should get the drive for 2021 and Bottas should retire

Well I be damned. I didnt expect that.

But whats the point of naming someone your official reserve driver if you pick someone else over him anyways?

Yea, kinda makes that role seem pointless tbh. But I think Mercedes were in a unique position where they could pluck a highly rated current driver into their seat

The reserve driver isn't there to step in by default. There have been nominated reserve drivers this year who couldn't have stepped in even if they wanted to - that's how Hulkenberg ended up in the Racing Point

Anyway delighted for Russell and Aitken, two good guys who deserve the opportunity to show what they can do. Will be interesting to see how Aitken compares to Latifi

If I was Mercedes, I would've picked Russell as well. It's really gonna be interesting to see how he'll perform. Unlike Hulkenberg, he's been racing all season but also doesn't know the car and it's the W11 and there's Botttas so I'm excited to see him race for Mercedes.

Before the first race: "Stoffel Vandoorne is in the unique situation where he is reserve driver for Mercedes, Racing Point AND McLaren. If any driver of those teams has a positive coronatest, he will replace that driver".
Now: we have had 3 drivers with positive tests, all in those three teams, Vandoorne was never asked.

Dick move towards Vandoorne.
I hope Williams got a huge pile of money. If not, they don't deserve scoring that point they are hoping for.

When was the last time a third driver drove the championship winning car after it clinched the championship. I can't think of one.

Also when was the last time there were 2 debutants in the same race that wasn't the first or last race of the season.

In this case, it was also a matter of timing. If Lewis had tested positive today or tomorrow, Williams would probably be less receptive to let Russell go (and the same for Campos and Aitken).

In these circumstances, getting a driver with 2020 car experience is much better than someone with just a theoretical idea of it.

IMHO the role of reserve driver was made redundant when testing was effectively banned. There is no chance for a reserve driver to get seat time in the current car apart from the occasional Friday session, and if they don't get a drive the next season then they can end up going for a long time without driving a current car, like Vandoorne has.

What if Bottas outruns Russell? :p

Jack Aitken in F1. Geez, this guy is below Jolyon Palmer level. What is Paul di Resta doing?

The biggest slap in the face of Bottas is probably how he doesn't stand a chance to get the title, even with Hamilton missing 2 races out of 17.

I know it's been the case theoretically for many seasons, but when it actually happens, and the rival isn't physically there on the grid, it must hurt even more. I hadn't felt this level of pity for a driver since Barrichello. What an awful place to be in. It would be more motivating to be in the underdog competitor.

I think it even might lead to Bottas losing his 2nd place to Verstappen. For some reason I think Verstappen will beat Bottas in both races, but this time it is for victory and the points difference will be bigger than when Hamilton would be there taking all the points for the win.

Bottas still getting more money than us combined haha but let's be honest he's racing against someone almost unbeatable

plus they aren't giving him the boot as he does the work fine for Mercedes

He was doing fine until a few races ago. Yeah, he is up against the best driver but he occasional could challenge him on sunday but the last few races he was complete shit.

Something happened that busted his confidence. If Russell gets 2 races and bests him in both I wouldn't be shocked if Mercedes swaps them for 2021.

Lewis destroyed him. That's what happened.

I do think that Bottas, as underwhelming as he is, isnt a driver I would expect to be destroyed by anyone in the same machinery. I think Bottas arrives to every season with high confidence that he can be an actual contender for the title, and it shows on track.

But that confidence fades away with time. There has to be something within the team that hurts him. I do believe there are clearly different treatments for both drivers. Imagine having the best tool to excel at what you do, then everyone around you expects and works so that the guy beside you, can pull it off. Mercedes doesn't want to have a Nico/Lewis feud again, and they won't get rid of Bottas, because it works for them, WCC-wise. I think Bottas is just waiting for Hamilton to retire, so he can get the chance to lead the team. That is, if they don't get Max and we're back at square one.

I still believe in him.

I'm hesitant to "blame" it all on Lewis.

I felt he always knew Lewis was better and he just had to be there when Lewis had an off day. And he used to be able to capitalize on those moments.
If it was purely Lewis trashing him week in week out, his confidence would have been shot a long time ago.

Russell is a much better option than Vandoorne. So is Hulkenberg.

95% of people not born in Belgium can see Russell is a better choice than Vandoorne. Vandoorne probably hasn't driven an F1 car that's not a show car in years. Vandoorne would have been like Hulkenberg and had his neck fall apart after 15 laps.

They're not obliged to choose the reserve driver, they're have stakeholders and supporters who want the best driver in the car at all times.

They have both titles, it doesn't matter.

But I'm not going to be that Belgian guy who bitches about the Belgian driver not getting the drive.

Lewis Hamilton is the first reign F1 drivers world champion with novel coronavirus, yet another record never to be broken under his belt.
