I am not an engineer, but I do find it a bit weird that because DRS didn't close, the car just went left into the barrier. I would imagine you would not make the turn, but not going into the barriers at that point.

Must've locked the rears without the rear downforce, and the uneven grip between left and right due to the wet patch of track made it even worse. Add to that that Ericsson was driving the car, which also made it worse (just kidding)

I think this is all a conspiracy between team Sauber and the FIA to prove the Halo's effectiveness.

Now we've checked off the rollover, and the car landing on cockpit scenarios. I expect the Sauber teammates to follow each other on the straight at some point of the week-end, and one of them to hit the "eject rear wheel" button to finalize the testing campaign.

Was there any footage of Michael Schumacher's testing accident in the early 00's at the same spot as Ericsson? I would imagine it was a pretty massive one as well.

James Courtney had by all accounts the mother of all accidents in the Jaguar also at Monza in the early 00's which sounded similar, minus the rolls. Would have been interesting to have footage of that.

Huge shunts in the late summer Monza test used to be almost an annual occurance
I think Micheal's shunt there was 2001 (where he rolled again apparently, he made comparisons to his Melbourne flip earlier that year) Courtney's was 2002 where he hit so hard he got concussed and lost the British F3 championship as a result, and I think Ralf Schumacher reportedly Cartwheeled nearly out of the track in 2003 leading to him missing a race in favour of Mark Gene (and famously confusing James Allen on commentary for that grand prix when Gene took the lead after Montoya pitted, Allen thought JPM had beat Schumacher out of the pits  )

But I think they were all closed tests back then, as there was never any video or even pictures of anything but the wrecked cars.
Bizarre.

If they ever invent time travel that's where i'll go.

Going off the rearward facing OnBoard they just showed it looks like it was a similar failure to what Alonso suffered at Bahrain in 2013 where the DRS flap opened too far & got stuck.

Raikkonen a similar crash there during practice in 2001 although without the flips.

, I believe Ralf cart wheeled through the gravel at Curva Grande when he had a suspension failure. Not positive though.

From this article in 2003:
Quote:
Ralf Schumacher suffered a heavy crash on the first day of testing at Monza today when late afternoon the Williams came off the track at the second Lesmo corner and impacted heavily with the barrier. The car reportedly went airborne and somersaulted before coming to a halt.

Pretty much ended his single-seater career. Never seemed the same after that crash.

At least we now know how they are surviving in F1 without obvious sponsors

if you watch the famous ralph Firman crash at hungaroring where he lost his rear wing it was exactly the same behaviour from the car:

- you don't have downforce on rear axle
- rear wheels lock
- rear of the car doesn't lose speed and tries to overtake the front.
- cars spins

I'm sure that were aftermath pictures of Ralf's testing accident. I saw them in Motorsport News at the time. I had some of Michael's, though.

There are of Ralf's because I remember them being posted on the old forum at some point. As far as Courtney's crash goes there aren't any. At least none that were made public any way.

You know it was a big one when Schumacher lies on the ground.

talking about test crashes that we never seen anything of, did it ever surface anything other than this picture about the famous Zonta test crash at silverstone?
