Why can't Ferrari or Mclaren put one of their junior drivers there? Bianchi, Magnussen surely could use some experience in a reasonable good team.

I seriously wonder how much money Barrichello is bringing that they even consider him...

Well, they would want an experienced driver to partner Sirotkin. Two rookies (or heaven forfend, Gutierrez staying for another year) would leave them in real trouble developmentally.

Well Sauber have done it before - 2011 with Kobayashi and Perez. You're being too hard on Gutierrez, he needs to be cut some slack.

I'm sorry, but in what way is Rubens so 'experienced' when he has been out of it for 2 years? Besides, with 2014, I believe the experience will lie with the engineers, not so much the drivers.

Rubens is similar to JV in a way, in that he vastly overvalues his self worth and contribution to F1. The difference being JV actually won a title.

Sauber also had James Key in 2011, which negated their need for an experienced driver to provide developmental feedback.

It's not by accident that Sauber went for PDLR in Canada 2011 instead of Gutierrez. It's not by accident that they spent at least 3 months trying to scrape together the money last winter to pay Slim so that they wouldn't have to put Gutierrez in the car this year. It's not by accident that they are now considering a driver who is over 40 and two years departed from Formula 1. Sauber have worked with him for 3 years now. They know what his worth is. Judging by their actions, it doesn't seem to be very much.

As far as I am aware, Massa is not interested in moving that far down the grid.

Well if a driver is placed into an working environment, an atmosphere twhere there is so little support for him, let alone positive energy surrounding him then he's not really being given a fair chance to shine now is he? I point to Heidfeld at Renault in 2011 as a prime example.

Gutierrez is better than he's being made out to be.

That's irrelevant. Hulkenberg isn't part of this conversation and nor should he be a comparison.

However, contradicting myself (and repeating myself from a few weeks back) Hulkenberg is a known quantity and he's only just being able to drag a half decent result out of this shitty car. Koba and Perez probably wouldn't have done much more.

So, back on point. Cut Gutierrez some slack.

Gutierrez has had plenty of support in the three years he has been part of the team. They have tried to nurture him, to help him develop as best they could. In their opinion, he doesn't seem up to it.

I simply hold the same opinion Sauber does. That opinion could lead them, at the moment, to a Rubens\Sirotkin partnership for next year.

For the record, a Rubens\Gutierrez partnership would almost certainly be better than Rubens\Sirotkin, but that would be dependent on Sirotkin not getting a Superlicense.

from what I understand, the superlicence is granted easily after some hundred miles of testing without too much foolishness.

Normally, yes, although Sauber have made clear their intention to race Sirotkin and so the FIA might be more cautious in giving one out, as opposed to, say, Ma Qing Hua, who was only ever going to be a Friday tester.

If Rubens gets the chance to do what he enjoys the most in his life, who are we to judge him?

Off course whether it is a good move by Sauber is another thing.
