Tradition...

But if you're going to run a back-to-back, Spain/Monaco would surely be the best one as it's only a quick trip up the motorway. Even with track action starting on Thursday.

Ermm.... a quick trip up the motorway would be Monaco and Monza. Barcelona to Monaco isn't as close or as convenient as you think.

one good way to decrease costs is reduce number of races and make more of it in Europe, with races in north america, brazil and japan

you avoid excessive air logistics and stay where F1 should be all the time

That won't happen though as long as Bernie keeps saying stuff like he views Europe as "bankrupt" and will only go to a place that can afford his massive sanctioning fees.

Lets face it, to put on an F1 race (and assuming you're not a rich Middle-eastern Prince or something) you have to make a loss and hope the events you run for the rest of the year drag your facility back out of the red and into profit.
Or be in a country where your government views F1 as a big advert for potential tourists and subsidises the races.

How many countries in Europe are willing to put up with that wonky way of doing business?
About as many as we have on the calender.
It's only by a small miracle and very deep pockets we got another new European race next year...there aren't that many passionate billionaires around willing to buy a racetrack and fund a race out of their own wallet.

The point being, is that is the average travel time by road for most of the European venues from the various UK bases. So it is not as close and convenient as Phil suggest.

The bill to hold a GP for a country is anywhere between $20m to $60m (Korea were getting ripped off lol) meaning over a GP season FOM gets $500m to $800m from countries. Do you think they want to lose that money and have less races? If you were Bernie, you'd want 45 races a year.

even though I'm one of the greatest fans of the sport, my opinion is to have less races, 16 or 17 is a good number, with at least 9 european rounds, I know they got the fees, but I still believe that there are many ways to cut costs, but all Bernie can see is $$$

I think that is one of the problems. European rounds don't generate enough money. They are on the calendar for historical reasons, they don't/can't pay the amounts other country's can come up with.

But the revenue is based on races now. Teams can offer sponsors exposure based on 20 events. If you lose an event, bang goes 5%.

You can offer them 30 races of exposure and they still wouldn't bite. Look at Mercedes' sponsors - Petronas (hardly big in terms of money into F1) and Blackberry (nothing more needs saying).

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

and that's because they cutted the main source of sponsorhip money: tobacco

things gets more sad when they were responsible for great liveries also

Heh, was thinking of that. Blackberry are in huge problems. Estimating they'll lose £600 million! Doubt they'll continue sponsoring Mercedes.

Balckberry are aiming to be acquired by November. And yes they are posting $1bn losses and are about to layoff 40% of their staff. But then again since when have details like this stopped a company sponsoring an F1 team?
