I know their priorities are wrong, but this particular idea is a fucking good idea. If anything, you should get one, two even four points for fastest lap.

It gives drivers an incentive to push until the last lap, whether you are first or tenth.

Imagine 20 laps into the race, dark clouds in the sky, rain on the radar, drivers will be pushing like mad for those points right up until the rain comes.

but why only for the first ten? Why not everyone? Could spice up things in the end of the race if especially drivers at the back will go for new tyres and try a fastest lap.

Because it was banned in GP2 before and restricted to Top 10 finishers on merit. Nobody gave a flying fuck about the FL bonus point "excitement" - I as sure heck didn't.

Liberty is running out of ideas and begins to copy ones from the ladder series? Good luck with that crap :slaphead:

How about a point for the driver who made the most overtaking manoeuvres too?

BS. It's all down to DRS these days. Bonus points would always go to a big team driver that either serves a grid penalty or gets spun out on the first lap. Hooray the excitement!

Yeah, right. And then they are told on the radio to save fuel, tires & overheating brakes and so much for pushing until the last lap. Only the backmarkers would give it a try since they're not running in points anyway.

I dont know but they should have sponsored Tyrrell....... Kent Tyrrell

Well, then I guess I haven't been influenced by tobacco sponsorship. I'd bought KOOL though, because CART.

A point for the team/driver that does the most laps in practice would make Fridays more entertaining

VSC allows pitters to make up time on those who didn't

Post subject:  Re: 2019 Formula One Random Discussion Thread

they could do some sort of stage racing in F1 but putting the SC in at random after 20% of the race is completed and before 90% of completion

you know, if they want to go for gimmicks to spice race up, that's the way

Ok let's not push it though. Points for pole, or for fastest lap, have been awarded in the past in major series and it's not a completely ridiculous idea (cf. CART, they had most laps led points as well - not fastest lap though).

It has a good spirit behind it. If you've had pole and led most the race being the fastest driver, or led most laps, then abandon because of a puncture or a backmarker running into you, you get a (small) consolation prize. It's fair. In 2002 it would've helped Montoya get recognition for being the pole hunter against Ferrari's domination. It has its merits, you may not like it but it's far from a "gimmick". Even if a driver ends up raking them all bonus points in one week-end, it just means that his flawless victory is slightly more valued than that of a guy who was not the fastest and got "just" the final victory on race day.

In the past? The good old 8-6-4-3-2 system they used from the start till 59? Ah yes, and the point for fastest lap they gave as well, then.

Point for fastest lap is good, will reward the teams who don't just go for a tyre and fuel saving race. Might encourage teams to stop more and run aggressive

Author:  RtN [ Fri Mar 08, 2019 10:24 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 2019 Formula One Random Discussion Thread

There are no teams that don't go for a tyre and fuel saving race.

All the teams save tyres because any extra unwanted pitstop for new ones will leave them trapped behind cars they can't pass.

All the teams save fuel because if they can get away with only putting in 90kgs instead of 100kgs then that's 10kgs less weight that also helps with tyre wear (this is also why the move to make fuel tanks 105kgs this year won't work, because all the teams will still put only 90kgs (or whatever they can get away with) in to save weight).

And even if Liberty really lost whatever of the plot they have left and got the FIA to mandate a minimum of three pitstops and a full fuel tank at the start of the race, the teams would still run at 80% because the engine and all of the hybrid gubbins attached to it (and the gearbox) has to last a third of the season per part.

As this fastest lap point is restricted to the top 10, then none of the midfield teams are going to gamble on a late pitstop for the extra point because they would lose too much track position and would end up not only losing the position and points they already had, but would then also lose the opportunity for the fastest lap point that they pitted for in the first place.

So, assuming that the top 3 teams are still the top 3 teams and still have the same sort of gap to the rest of the grid as before, then the driver who is last out of the 6 is the most likely to pit for a chance at the point. But the most likely scenario of all is that no-one pits late at all and the top drivers may get one lap towards the end of each race where they are allowed to push.
