Wasn't it Kimi's crash in testing that brought about the change for that corner?

Yeah, I thought it was a safety issue - lack of run-off in the second-to-last corner

Done to reduce entry speed for the final corner, in fact:

Autosport.com wrote:
The Barcelona circuit will have a new chicane when Formula One cars begin testing at the Spanish circuit today after the revamp works were completed this week.

The new chicane, built between the Europcar and New Holland corners, has being installed to improve safety at the circuit, with speeds now reduced ahead of the final corner that leads into the main straight.

The revised layout begins at the Europcar corner, where the braking point has been moved forward thanks to a tighter corner.

That is followed by a short straight and two more corners linked to the previous layout.

Run-off areas at the new chicane are asphalted and incorporate a new safety barriers system which can absorb impacts of up to 200km/h.

Also, safety revisions at the Wurth corner have been completed, with the run-off area now increased by six meters.

In another story a couple of days later, both DC and Webber slated the design, saying drivers had been given no input and that Webber thought it had been done for the bikes.

He crashed in the penultimate corner rather, didn't he?

I also thought the change was to promote overtaking by making the last corner easier and reducing aero turbulence.

 This sentence is stupid. It makes no sense from a physics point of view, a concrete wall can absorb impacts of up to 400kph, and so what?

I liked Barcelona until they added the pointless chicane, which ruined any overtaking into T1

What overtaking?

The only overtake which ever comes to mind at T1 Barc is Webber on Alonso. Was an aggressive chop to the inside. My mind has abolished all other memories, if they ever existed and even that one might be dreamed up as I can't find a video.

This is by far the best overtake ever seen in Barcelona, it wasn't 100% dry though.

I thought DC did a nice overtake on Schumacher here.

After some searching I found it, thought it was in '99 but it was a year later:

" After the stops, Schumacher was slowing down and fast. Häkkinen was getting away at almost a second a lap and Coulthard was closing in at around a second a lap. On lap 46, Coulthard was right with him, Next lap, he made his move at the first corner, trying to get him on the inside. Schumacher moved to the inside but Coulthard got past him on the outside, like he did on Barrichello in Britain. " - Wikipedia

There was little passing with the old layout but I don't think the new chicane improved it at all. Old layout with DRS might be slightly better.

Was it the second to last corner where Badoer went over the barriers in testing?

Sounded like a bad crash as well :8:

Badoer's accident happened after he lost a wheel at high speed. His car somersaulted into the gravel and went over the tyre barrier.

Blimey, I don't remember that one :o

The issue with the final corner was probably highlighted best by Montermini's crash there in '94. If you got onto the grass/gravel, you tended to get sucked into the wall which came towards the track at a nasty angle. I don't think they could have changed this without moving the first grandstand, so it was always going to be easier to slightly reduce the corner exit speed instead - it is now an easy flat rather than a ragged flat, if you see what i mean.

Or Schumacher on Senna in 2012! True classic!
