If RBR keeps their car in 1 piece that should be another win for them in the bag and increasing the gap.

9 rounds into a 22/23 round season and we are seeing grid penalties for changed components, what a fucking joke :flag:

I hope all teams would start receiving massive amount of grid penalties. If there were 12 consecutive races where up to 15 drivers received penalties each time, that would become too silly, so they would be forced to change the rules.

Giving them restricted numbers of components, doesn't actually save money, that's the dumb part.

If anything, it means they have to build and test more of these components on dynanometers and in test labs to ensure their long term reliability. Plus they can build 100 turbos a year, nothing stopping them, only have to use 3-4 or whatever it is in a season.

When drivers qualfying in 16th have 43 positions worth of grid penalties it makes the sport look like a joke.

I'd do this, tbh:

If the driver has more place penalties than places he can drop in the grid:

- Use all the places available in the grid for them. If he qualifies 1st, can use 20 places and start from the back. If he qualifies 16th, that's just 4 places.
- The remaining places with force a driver to start from the pitlane, with any place left, being worth a second after the pitlane grid goes green. In the example of the 16th place qualified drivers with 43 spots in added penalties, he would have to wait 39 seconds, before being able to leave the pitlane.

That'd surely stop this moves that some top teams do, in terms of sacrificing one qualifying session in an overtake-friendly track and actually add a full range of replacement parts into their season roster.

On the other hand, the best solution would be to just enforce the cost cap. If a team wants to use more resources to have more turbos to change than ICE, then so be it. Or if they want to use more MGUK stuff, then have at it. Just don't spend more than what is allowed to.

They want to increase the number of races and then double it with sprint races but refuse to increase the amount of engine (parts) they can use.

Surely not a flawed idea :whistling:

I dunno, as mere viewer, the idea of more races with the fastest cars having to start down the order and fight their way through appeals to me, better this way than them actually going with reversed grids

Just waiting for the magic day when the top 4 in the championship all have various grid penalties and it's a proper fight through the field for all of them

Are there any concrete numbers of how many components are made and tested for them to run 3-4 a year? I would imagine it is like you said, they must go through a TON to be able to get it up to the standard of supposedly lasting 1/3 of the season and more while still having performance.

As silly as this sounds, I actually liked Charles' engine blow ups the last couple of races and Max's DNFs early on as it bought back that old school element of luck and randomness of reliability woes. I actually like that. The crappy part, is that (these breakdowns excluded) the cars have become so generally bullet proof that they hurt way more than they used to.

I'd actually go for a reversed-grid non-championship race, just to see what happens. A couple of practices and line them up based of championship finishing positions.

Bring back non-championship races. Allow customer cars in those races and let any team apply.

Agreed, but only if it's a "multi-class" race with everyone on track. Cars relative speed is reasonable and track is big. Can't be more risky than what IMSA did at Lime Rock.

Edit: no wait, it seems that IMSA does not race multi-class with prototypes at Lime Rock, that would be insane. I've seen it in sim racing only. Leaving it there for posterity

IMSA most certainly raced prototypes with GT's at Lime Rock. I was also certainly not insane. The drivers didn't like it perhaps, but it was fun to watch.
