I can't blame Alonso for criticizing Ferrari, he has all the right to do so in my opinion.

However, James Allison is onboard for them next year so perhaps it's not the wisest thing to do.

I predict that with all this talk of potential rain in the run up to a GP, as normal there will be no rain affecting the race on Sunday. No need to thank me.

I concur

Correct, he does have the right to do so. But he doesn't have the right to criticize Ferrari in the manner he has done so over the past 18 months.

Pleased to see Ricciardo get the seat. He's a really great guy and very quick. He'd have a bagful more points if Toro Rosso knew how to run a strategy.

Will still rain on Friday and Saturday to ruin the normal runs of FPs

It's quite hard to not rain at no point during a Wallonian GP weekend

Interesting? They're sticking Hülkenberg to every team of the grid. :o

Read on racecar-engineering that James Allison doesn't think Michelin would enter F1 in 2014, while "others such as Nigel Stepney insist that the deal is already done. ", I quote.

There is also this nice part which I would love to materialize as it looks much better, as well as improving tire's performance:
Quote:
the French firm would almost certainly demand 18 inch wheel rims, which it already has a family of tyres to suit, used in LMP1, meaning that the tyres will have much lower profiles . Mercedes has reportedly already called for a switch to wider rims to deal with the additional torque generated by the 2014 power units.

Post subject:  Re: 2013 Random F1 Discussion

if Michelin enters, it will be Michelin + Pirelli, as the French want a tyre war, don't they? But I believe Pirelli want to be the sole supplier. And all this with just 4 months of the year left... what a bizarre situation.

Surely the wheel size change can't happen for next season? Seems a but too late in the day.

Post subject:  Re: 2013 Random F1 Discussion

That is correct. Pirelli won't want a fight with such a bigger company like Michelin which have the know-how to provide tires with a lot more performance. Hell, Pirelli won't even find a team to supply it to as everybody would desperately go with Michelin

I think Stepney is very wrong in that and Pirelli is the most likely to remain as sole supplier. But this all should have been decided already tbh

Well, it's too late already for anything that isn't Pirelli's last tires(2011,2012,2013), which teams already have data and know what to expect. Even Pirelli with 2014 spec tires would already too late for the teams, talking in a preferable scenario for car designing

Remember that in 2008, teams were testing quite early with Bridgestone slicks(there was a Barcelone test mid-season) to already know what to design the car to

2014 can be quite a fantastic and unpredictable year with all this unknowns

I don't really know where else to put this but apparently in the Laguna Seca Historic F1 race the leader was coming up to lap a backmarker in the corkscrew, there was a miscalculation and he rolled it down the scariest corner in American motorsport :8:

Then you had the next 2 drivers stopping, lifting up the car and allowing him to get out.

Sounds scary and classy all in one go!

Looking for pics, vids or anything that'd corroborate this though, atm I just have one post from the Radio Le Mans facebook to go on...

Whats wrong with the tyre dimensions they have now???
Why change something that works?
Then they have to develop new suspension, arms, brakes, discs... and this all aint for free!!
- it will cost big time... + the car will get heavier and slower (like it isnt slow enough for 2014) (5sec)...
I dont understand why does F1 need wheel change??

Post subject:  Re: 2013 Random F1 Discussion

The current tyre dimensions are antiquated and do not directly relate to any part of the current day automotive industry let alone any other form of motorsport.

at least rear tires should be wider by 15% at least IMO

Also more grip=speeds will increase.

And potentially even better, the ratio between mechanical grip and aero grip will swing slightly more in mechanical's favour so....potentially better racing? :?

Author:  kals [ Tue Aug 20, 2013 8:00 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 2013 Random F1 Discussion

You see, I still think there's a flaw in that thinking. Because I'm sure there is a such as thing as too much mechanical grip. And surely that wouldn't be good for racing?

Perhaps scotty needs to help this point, but I've always been in the belief that developments in intricate suspension systems and tyres have as much affect on providing poor racing as aero does.

I've no scientific or mechanical expertise to call upon to justify my belief, but it does seem logical to me that if you spend time, money and effort developing systems to ensure the most amount of tyre surface stays as flat as possible on the road for the most amount of time then it would increase cornering speeds, decrease braking distances, etc... so no different to increasing aerodynamically induced downforce.
