Fernando Alonso says any new Ferrari driver must be stronger than Felipe Massa
By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, September 20th 2012, 12:02 GMT

Fernando Alonso says Ferrari must be convinced it is hiring a driver who is stronger than Felipe Massa if it decides to replace the Brazilian.

Massa's future at the Maranello team has been in doubt since the opening few races of the season. Several drivers, including Sergio Perez, have been linked to his seat in recent months.

Alonso labelled the drivers on that list as "little names" compared to Massa and his achievements in Formula 1.

"I've been working with Felipe for three years now and we have a very good relationship," said Alonso on Thursday in Singapore.

"If the team decides to change Felipe, anyone who arrives has to be better than Felipe.

"I've seen a lot of names written, and I don't know if they have been written with the head or the heart.

"With all the names you hear, if you compare what Felipe has done in Formula 1 and what these little names have done in Formula 1..."

The two-time champion stressed that another priority for Ferrari should be to find a driver who respects its tradition and is ready to work for the team.

"I think we need to respect the decision the team will make," said Alonso.

"In my opinion we need to have a driver that respects Ferrari, that respects the tradition that here we work for the team, for the red cars, and this is the first priority."

Massa, meanwhile, says he is just trying to keep his focus on doing the best job possible without worrying too much about his future.

"We need to carry on, trying to get good results, trying to do the best in the car, trying to put everything together," he said.

"That's what I'm always trying to do and that's the most important thing for me. My contract is not signed yet but I'm really looking forward to that."

pretty clear Alonso wants Massa to remain his bitch. "The team coming first"... I suddenly remember why I hate Alonso's character so much.

Doesn't Ferrari traditionally reveal their drivers for the next year at Monza?

Was Massa much more experienced than Perez is when he joined Ferrari as a racedriver??

As far as I can see he did only 1 season more and was a testdriver in between. 0 podiums.....

Sauber weren't as competitive in those years as they are today so comparing the relative success of Perez versus Massa is irrelevant. Additionally, Massa was very wild on occasion whereas Perez has shown to be very mature despite his lack of experience.

Suggestions around that Alguersuari is on the verge of buying himself a seat at Sauber for next season.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Go buy one at HRT ffs (it's not like he'll do any worse there), don't make one of the Sauber gunners jobless.

That would piss me off. He should join IndyCar or go to GP2.

Sadly I think Kamui's almost reached his potential and that one of his key advantages, overtaking, was taken away with the introduction of DRS.

Alguersuari is better than many give him credit for. He did a good job at the back end of 2011, and he's still only 22.

Looks like there's a draft 2013 calendar out and New Jersey takes Valencia's place.

Bernie won't agree but that's bad for Formula 1

It is a world championship, but it's tough on a lot of people that work in the sport. Not just physically, but financially. Most teams are based in Europe, ditto journalists, so a lot of the time the calendar doesn't make sense.

I mean, I can't work out why they don't have Abu Dhabi and Bahrain back-to-back

If they're looking for some new European tracks, try Algarve and Slovakia Ring, both are Grade 1 I believe and both are really nice tracks.

Just noticed that Hockenheim is listed. Nurburgring must have pulled out.
