He was so lucky in that crash, the roll bar just failed straight away and luckily the Saubers had higher cockpit sides

Was Diniz the one who span in Adelaide 1995 and took 3 whole donuts to get straight again? It's like Bjorn Wirdheim, you're not going to be recognised for anything except that one moment madness.

Also I was watching Spain 1996 the other day, Murray Walker tears shreds off Diniz for about 2 minutes straight, yet he managed to finish one of the most treacherous races of the year (about a bajillion laps down though).

That was Pedro Lamy that struggled to get going in the right direction. However, the point remains though, as Diniz is just notable for paying an humiliating amount of money for his time in F1.

Diniz had evolved into a solid driver by the late 90's. Wasn't he linked to the Ferrari seat for 2000 or was that just paper talk?

Paper talk. I remember Tarqo Marques being linked to Ferrari.

But yeaa he did vastly improve up until '99 but after that accident at the Nurbrugring he went downhill fast. 2000, he seemed worse then when he was at Forti. Guess the accident really shook him.

Official: Jérome d'Ambrosio replaces Grosjean at Monza

that's great news!

Pressure will be huge for him, it will be a one time chance to show what he is capable of in a good car.

Cross fingers he does everything right. He could be the first belgian points scorer for 20 years!

if he messes up he will be history.

Diniz wasn't too bad for somebody that bought his seat. Wasn't he another one to lose it in Eau Rouge in 1999? Somehow got away without a shunt of BAR proportions.

Marques...I thought for a second he was a big prospect who quit after a shunt....but that was Esteban Tuero....then again reading his F1rejects page, I think I might have overestimated him

I remember the CART safety crew fucking up Marques' suspension while trying to get him restarted

Once D'Ambrosio is officially announced I reckon he will do a reasonable job, something akin to Marc Gene at Monza in 2003 when he replaced Ralf Schumacher.

Tuero's only problem was that he came in way way way too early. Oh, and the car was a shitbox.

If he had come in in 2000 instead of Mazzacane, I think he would've impressed a lot of people.

Jérôme D’Ambrosio to Drive in Monza

2012/09/04

Lotus F1 Team third driver Jérôme D’Ambrosio will compete for the team in the Italian Grand Prix as a replacement for Romain Grosjean who received a one-race ban after the last race in Spa.

Jérôme – who contested the 2011 Formula 1 season as a driver for the Marussia Virgin Racing team - had a seat fitting in the race chassis on Sunday night in Belgium and is working closely with the team to ensure a seamless transition from third driver to race driver for Monza.

Eric Boullier, Team Principal
“When we signed Jérôme as our third driver we signed a man who is highly motivated, fresh, talented and who contested the full 2011 season. We hope that this will pay dividends when he drives the car this weekend in Monza. We know that Jérôme is well integrated into the team and that he did a good job when he drove the E20 at the Mugello test. Now he has the challenge of a Grand Prix at the challenging circuit of Monza, in a car which is capable of finishing on the podium. One thing is for sure, he’s half Italian and I think I know which driver the spectators will support apart from Fernando ! It’s a tough task for Jérôme, but we will be supporting him in every way to achieve a good result.”

Jérôme D’Ambrosio, Third Driver
“My desire for 2012 has always been to get back into the seat of a Formula 1 car so I am grabbing this opportunity with both hands. Monza is a fantastic circuit and I can’t wait to take to the track on Friday. As third driver I have worked with the team at every Grand Prix, attending all the briefings and meetings that the race drivers do, so I am well prepared in this respect. Monza is a superb circuit, but it is also quite a technical one so I am not underestimating the task ahead of me. I want to reward the faith that the team has in me with a good haul of points from the race. I will hand the wheel back to Romain after Sunday’s race and I hope that this one showing in Italy will allow me to show my capabilities fully.”

Lotus F1 Team’s Top Ten Facts about Jérôme D’Ambrosio

1. He’s so eager he sometimes arrives at the track before all the engineers.
2. His last race was the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.
3. He was nicknamed ‘custard’ by his last team, in recognition of the similarity named Ambrosia custard brand.
4. He is The Master. Or, at least, he was the inaugural International Formula Master champion in 2007.
5. He is the first Belgian to race in F1 since Bertrand Gachot in 1995.
6. He likes taxi drivers.

7. If he wasn’t an F1 driver, he’d like to be an airline pilot.
8. He has very blue eyes.
9. His name generates ‘about’ 1,370,000,000 results on Google
10. At 1.72m he’s the team’s shortest driver.

I really hope he does not bin it on the first lap or something :C This could make or break his entire top-level career.

Nothing for this year. Remember Hulk with his pole ;)
P.S. or Salo))

Well Hulk was already full time with Williams, not a stand in for anyone. And with Salo, his stand in role for Schumi with Ferrari lead to a full time seat with Sauber for 2000.

Shameful plug alert:

If you want to read the best and worst F1 replacements, buy this week's Autosport, with that little segment compiled by yours truly.

I can't be sure what was put in. It's only a brief segment on the side.

What is quite scary about Tuero is that he's just 34.
