And by optimistic, you're not referring to Clarkson's hairstyle?

As a kid, I really cheered on that team. What's amazing is the finance involved. £4,000,000 for a full season of F1 racing? Think how many entries we could have if the costs were that realistic again.

that ammount was standard for a top team in the 70's. If they kept developing the ammount would raise to more than 15mi

and they were optimistic because the rules had changed and no one knew that Benetton would dominate

One of the most optimistic predictions in the history of sport

Still, BAR's laughable "Well, Reynard has won the first race in every catagory it's entered, so we'll do that in 1999" is the best/worst one.

I don't think either of the new teams in 1994 (Pacific & Simtek) were helped all that much by the various rule changes that were introduced through that year. They were clearly not going to challenge for points but they may have done a little better & lasted a bit longer than they did if they were able to 100% focus on improving performance rather than chasing rule changes 3-4 times through the year.

There's a collection of post Imola news reports which includes a discussion about Pacific Gp in which Keith Wiggins says that the batch of regulation changes through the year would be a problem for them as they didn't have the funds to develop those new parts & that he felt that simply restricting engine performance would have reduced speeds to meet the FIA's new safety push as well as been far fairer to the smaller teams that couldn't afford to produce those new parts as well as continue there natural performance development plans.

I also believe that the changes to the air boxes & the switch to pump fuel for the Canadian Gp also had a bigger impact on there year old Ford HB V8's than it did the current year units which were quickly upgraded to adapt to those changes without losing too much performance.

Pacific Gp related, There 1995 car is still one of my favorite car designs.

The 1995 car was basically the same as 1994 but with a revised front nose and much more development.

So, apparently it's a done deal, just waiting for announcement.

"Massa to return allowing Bottas to go to Mercedes"

And Wehrlein to Sauber then, I guess.

Still baffles me how such an underwhelming driver could find himself in one of the most prized seats in F1 (Bottas that is)

Just shows how pathetic he is. Clearly he was forced out of the car in favor of Stroll and Bottas. And now he's willing to return to the team that ditched him just a few months ago. It's like going back to your abusive ex and ask him to bitchslap you some more.

What the heck?

Also the whole Monza announcement, the farewells, etc... just to return? This is as awkward as saying goodbye to some acquaintance, then both start walking in the same direction

LOL like anyone here would turn down millions of dollars to fill a seat for another year.

Well duh, most of us here probably have debt (either in loan or mortgage or whatever) or only a few thousand quid in savings. Getting 6 million for filling a seat would be a no-brainer.
But Massa's bank account probably wouldn't notice that 6 million that much so why go back after they forced you into retirement.
I'd given them the finger and let them struggle.

Ok, put another way: LOL like anyone here would turn down the chance to do something we still love doing for another year.

He was pushed out - you said it yourself. He wants to keep racing, and wanted a full time drive somewhere next year. Felipe Massa doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would make his former team (who he clearly parted with on good terms) struggle for some kind of point-making.

You call it pathetic. A lot of people would call it otherwise.

At his age and in that car there isn't much glory to gain. Only chances to harm his reputation even further.
If it was Mercedes asking him to fill the seat I could completely understand it but in this case I'd rather do something else. Personally I'd be looking at Indy or NASCAR. But that's me.

Yeah, I agree there. It's the age-old 'when to retire' question that all racing drivers face. Massa has apparently thrown his hat in with Damon Hill and Riccardo Patrese, unless he is planning on doing a Prost 8)

He'd rather do something else too. That's why he's getting more money to come back than he was as a 'regular' driver - he's not doing it because he's desperate to stick around at any cost. It's an extraordinary situation and considering the timing and who else is available he is easily the best candidate that fits the criteria - Wehrlein isn't 25 and di Resta must have next to no actual mileage in the car. Everyone else is already under contract to someone else (Button\Buemi\etc.).

It's a favour to Williams more than anything else.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.
