bad news for the prospects of the Thai GP, but dare I say that the propability of this race happening was equal, if not lower, to New Jersey's?

Thailand's Formula 1 plans hit trouble as racing is banned

Thailand's plans to host a Formula 1 grand prix have hit trouble after Bangkok officials banned racing in the city's historic quarter.

Authorities said in April that a 5.995km circuit would be created near the Royal Thai Naval Dockyard in Bangkok, with the hope of landing a deal to host a Formula 1 race in 2015.

The track would have run past the Grand Palace, the Temple of Dawn and Victory Monument.

The plans, however, have suffered a setback after Bangkok's Metropolitan Authority passed a law that bans racing in the area.

"The law came into effect on May 16 prohibiting car racing in inner Bangkok because that area is a conservation for culture and arts," Kriangphon Pattanarat, director general of city planning department told AFP.

It is still unknown whether another location is being considered for the circuit.

That's a pretty good way by the Bangkok officials to say "we don't really want Formula 1 here".

Do it, do it, do it! Let's see how good F1 is when they have to run on the rims as there is no tyre supplier.

Martin Brundle is being spot on with his comments about the tyre test. If they only get a fine of a few million then the other big teams will think, yeaa that's a not bad hit to take to get some testing in and they'll do it.

Yes, they will get a ban for some races. Money penalty isn't fair. They got so much advantage for this, the FIA can only ban them for a couple of races. Or exclude Mercedes for the championship.

They'll do the same as they did to McLaren over Spygate1. They would be ill advised to piss off Mercedes and even Pirelli short term.

Any harsh penalty would make Mercedes leave anyway I think, the board isn't happy with F1 so something like this would certainly make it easier.

BBC did an interview with Brawn and one thing he said was really interesting, paraphrasing it was basically, "Pirelli approached many teams and always got the same answer, how much are you going to pay us for the test". Even Horner admitted Pirelli had approached them about doing a test, but dodged the question with a MP type answer when pushed on the subject.

I think there's far more to this than meets the eye so to speak.

Well, that's not really the question. Mercedes used their own drivers, and used a 2013 car. What Pirelli did or asked is not relevant, although they had to invite every team.

It's all relevant depending how you interpret the rules.

Has F1 ever punished it's own tyre supplier before?

Michelin you could argue messed up in 2005* but aside from them making reparations to the American fans I don't remember the FIA punishing them personally?

*Or you could argue Bridgestone were clever in that they got data on the diamond grinding at Indy due to their sister company Firestone running in the IRL for the Indy 500 and keeping that Data to themselves. Let alone the whole chicane polava....

+1

I love those big fat tires 8)

But going by what F1 has been in the last couple decades, it's probably not gonna happen

So does that mean pirelli did give every team the chance to test? I guess they would have already said that if that was the case, but could be a potential get out for pirelli.

The FIA gives in and 4 mid-season test sessions will happen in 2014.

About time. But why is it that the FIA have given in? I thought it was an issue for the teams regarding costs?

I think they realised that it isn't *too* expensive to remain at the circuit for 2 days on Monday/Tuesday. Allen says it's Barcelona, Silverstone and I'd guess two from either Hockenheim, Spa or Monza?

Plus if they find a cash laden GP2 driver, then it's easy money.
