Yeah I believe that's the catalyst of the whole thing as he causes a few drivers behind to lift and the concertina effect began.

He jumped across some gravel. Onboard shows that he had to struggle a bit to control the car, it took half the track

Turned it on thinking to see Hamilton walking... Saw a red flag with a Hass car cut in half... WTF I say?

Watched replays on youtube...

Wow. Never thought I'd see the day again with an F1 car that tore apart. I can't for the life of me figure out how he's even alive, let along crawled out of a gap that small with where the HALO is wedged into the barrier.

I don't think it's unusual, and it's a very worrying precedent. The same sort of thing was observed in 1993-94, and to a lesser extent in 1996-97. When the cars are perceived as safe but are starting to outgrow the tracks, it highlights the risks more. I think we have been at this point for some time with this breed of car.


But there is also the COVID factor. Marshall crews are smaller and VSCs become FCYs, and FCYs become red flags.
