Perhaps the bigger story is not whether Vandoorne or Drugovich will be the lead reserve driver, but the fact that AM had to find a new one at all. It implies that the current one is heading elsewhere...

I do not expect Fernando to see out his contract there, and I think they're not confident either.

Or Alonso wanted Vandoorne next to him? they were teammates. Maybe vandoorne is good at developing a car, or something Alonso thinks that can benefit the team. The McLaren was so bad we never saw his true potential

How much can a testdriver do these days apart from hoping that one of the race drivers gets covid?

And thats what puzzles me. Who would you rather be a stand-in for? For AM or Mercedes?

Apologies if this was already posted but I didn't see it. Looks like the only potentially interesting corner on the Las Vegas circuit has already been ruined by a chicane - https://www.racefans.net/2022/09/03/f1s-las-vegas-track-layout-changed-by-addition-of-new-chicane/

of course they did it

by judging how Liberty deals with their american rounds most of the race will be crowds pretending to be excited with the race while someone (Verstappen or Hamilton) walks away with an easy victory

We just need another chicane in the middle of that big straight

I think a chicane inside the chicane. Sorta a chicception

recently drivers have been expressing concern about tires again

looks like they were living under rocks for the past 40 years. F1 needs to ban tire warmers since 20 years ago and they keep claiming is unsafe

well so Indycar is unsafe since ever just because they run their tires to temperature instead of putting them on blankets

Drivers who use inters in heavy rain instead of full wets, don´t have to moan that their outlap gives a bit less grip.

When you can run the whole race on one set, have wets like ice and a big performance between teammate, concerns are expected.

Pirelli needs to go.

F1 cars have about 200-300hp more and produce a shitload more downforce than an Indycar. Unfair to compare the two.

Normally I would reserve judgment until it has been used in competition, but yikes, that layout looks pretty terrible and rather dull. Is there any undulation?

I would normally agree with you, but we have seen countless examples of these drivers not driving accordingly to the conditions and tyre levels, so I don't actually place as much creed into what they say anymore. See Japan as the most recent example.

Though to be fair Pirelli tyres are pretty rubbish to begin with.

Las Vegas is dead flat

Usually the Cold tyre phase after a pitstop lasting up to a lap vs a car undercutting on hot tyres is the only exciting part of DTM races.

Also a lot of the season of F1 takes place in hot hot heat countries where they could get a similar effect on the tyres just leaving them out in the sun for a while

Drivers are definitely being too cautious on this, because warm tyres are all they've ever known (and what are the tempertures on the tyres after theyve sat for 45 seconds to a minute on the grid waiting for the rest of the pack to grid up anyway?)

After the first 3 or 4 races with no tyre warmers, it'll become the new normal again and life will go on, they're just trying to cling to what they have because their skillset is based on the current regs and they don't want to have to learn a new skillset regarding colder tyres.

But they'll learn eventually.

The silver lining would be maybe all the criticism might actually compel Pirelli to produce a good tyre.
