Red Bull is spot on to look fast even when standing. Dunno if that's to compensate the lack of Honda power

they tweeted a video from Verstappen yesterday and he was smiling like a kid getting everything he wanted and then some on christmas.
Doesnt have to mean much but I dont see him as someone that could fake that if the car or engine wasnt that good.

At least we're up for a colourful season again. All we miss is some bright Jaguar green.

Do we not think they ran the Alfa with bits of the wing missing as they weren't ready/finished?

I'm pretty sure Alfa are on to something with that wing. Maybe not double-diffuser level, but probably more than walrus nose :D

Check out my amazing technical drawing:

Image

The elements are split into two shapes. The curved inner parts will try to pull the airflow down under that convenient suspension gap, where it can partially feed the floor. The bargeboards will take care of the rest. The main part, towards the outside, is almost certainly there to work the air harder, generate some downforce, and then flow towards the brake ducts, outer barge boards, and weird appendages on the sidepods. They put Gurney flaps on these, presumably so that Kimi didn't understeer off on his out lap.

The outer part is really clever. On one side of the gap you have the edge of the elements. On the other side you have a large, flat surface which is curved outwards just a little. In the middle, I expect there will be a low pressure area which directs airflow towards the outside of the front wheels, and conveniently stabilises the normally-turbulent air in front of the wheels.

It's probably not a coincidence that Toro Rosso had a much milder-looking version on their car today:

So if we are going by purely superficial non scientific speculation about the looks of the cars launched....the Mercedes looks about a second quicker than anyone else. It might just be the paint scheme but it just looks fast, real fast. Hope i'm wrong and it is a complete dud, but I fear not.

the Ferrari front wing has 2 black plates on each side, why not the entire black wing?

I don't know, but that nomination for the Oscars is already in the bag.

They did have the fastest car last year, at least from France-Monza

They just had the slowest team

This time last year, after the first test where Mercedes were running around on medium tyres with laptimes that didn't drop off, people predicted another 2002/2004.
Even though not getting the tyres in the right window ended up being one of their main weaknesses. They were either not warming them up enough or chewing through them

Ferrari were in Title contention in 2017 and 2018 and pushed Merc harder in 2018 than they did 17...so

Still, this year will be their year.
Sebastien Vettel 2019 world champion

I thought he was a Finn.

It's a genuine question though, the cars would look so much better without that crap stuck to the airbox.
