I see your "I miss Friday practice" and raise you "I miss Friday qualifying"

Last Friday qual session was 25 years ago

Didn't we had qualifying on friday, around 2003, to set the running order for saturday? I remember daddy Verstappen getting provisional pole position in the Minardi at a drying Magny Cours.

Whenever threads turn to this discussion it's clear to me why F1 is screwed no matter what it does. On this page and the last one I see at least 4 completely different definitions of what F1 should be. It should go back to old school technology and driver personalities. But it should be the pinnacle of modern car and engine technology. But it should be the fastest, most challenging form of racing with nothing artificially slowing the cars up. But it should level the playing field and give all teams a shot regardless of budget. But it should encourage innovation and let the best car designs win.

F1 can't possibly be all these things, so a majority of people here (and probably armchair critics in general) will never be happy. I think my own expectations are pretty simple, I just want to see more power in the hands of good drivers to make or defend a pass, and more than 1 driver winning 80% of races. But by the looks of things F1 will never make me happy either.

Halfway to 70 and already despise this world  opinions shouldn't be taken for facts. But I have reasons for mine as do you for yours.

Here is a quote from Nietzsche, which rings all the truer these days, if you know what I mean:

"All things are subject to interpretation. Whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth."

Whatever the regulations are, F1 needs be economically viable for new teams to try to enter races. Stop the damn Ivy league feel of it. Try friday pre-qualifying and 30-entries GP. Let us have cinderella stories with small teams getting into a race and reaching the midfield in the odd race. Let us have laughable attempts at an F1 team. Let us have unexpected drivers giving it all to get a laptime (which should come with a change in superlicense regulations).

that remember me of one of the funniest stories about pre qualifying that obviously featured Roberto Moreno. He was about to set a good time to take part in qualifying but his team (dunno if it was Coloni or Eurobrun) put old tires on purpose so he could not advance, simply because the team didn't had budget to take part in more sessions

Perry McCarthy has told similar stories about his time in Andrea Moda. He was the faster driver on occasion but didn't bring the most money to the team, so was regularly given dangerously old parts. They sent him out on wets at Silverstone in the dry, and in Hungary only let him out with 45 seconds left in the session because it looked like he might actually qualify.

Or maybe Red Bull are likely to announce Albon's exit after the race?

Ludicrous if Perez doesn't have a drive next season. Albon is wasting that seat.

And yet the hints I've seen online lately are pointing towards Albon keeping the drive. He was made a Wings for Life ambassador this week

I don't get it at all. If he does keep the drive, it's hard to suspend belief that there aren't other forces at play beyond pure performance

I don't know, after years of ruining many young drivers careers, it's nice to see Red Bull give someone a long term chance to adapt to the pressures of the top team instead of giving them 4 months then casting them aside

On the other hand, if Albon doesn't deliver before around Monaco next year at the latest, he won't just be booted back to Alpha Tauri, his entire motorsport career will be in ruins

For me, the best era will always be the early 90's... Say, 91 to 93. Crazy cars, variety of them, amazing drivers, dangerous circuits... Plus I was around 10 and F1 was just so foreign and captivating.

For my father, it was the 60's and 70's because of Clark and Stewart.

Different times for different people for different reasons.

And IndyCar takes the 80s and early 00s. Perfection.

Pietro Fittipaldi to debut this weekend for Haas, filling in for Romain Grosjean. Marking the return of the Fittipaldi name to the F1 grid for the first time in 26 years!

He could perpetuate the family tradition! He will be in a backmarker team, with a teammate that can throw a blocking move out of nowhere.

I remember a very young Pietro on the A1 GP grid with Emmo and Christian back in 2006. I've followed his career ever since. Amazing to see him in F1 but it would be incredible if he qualifies higher than 20th. At the very least, it'll be a quirky one-off

Max is apparently pushing for Hulkenberg for the other Red Bull seat

I might be the only one but I rather have Mazepin buying that seat than not having a 10th team next season.
