Button's retiring

I know they say it's a sabbatical, and I know he has an option for 2018, but yeah he is clearly retiring.

I wonder if his reserve driver contract allows for other forms of racing. If it does, I fully expect Webber to wangle him a drive at Le Mans.

I hope it does because Webber was trying hard to get him into WEC.

Very bold commercial. Good one too

Tast commercial, and actually a good product. Well done, Heineken.

Come on - "Heineken" and "a good product" don't go together :yuk:

In fairness, we are discussing the advert and not anything else that they produce

I can only imagine the 2018 option exists in case Alonso decides he's had enough at the end of next year. Vandoorne's going nowhere.

Now look, it's a bulk beer and everyone who likes beer must compliment micro-breweries only and hate the big guys. But Heineken is the biggest of them. So they're successful and probably rightly so. I'm not saying it's the beer of my choice or the best beer in the world. It's just a good product for the company that makes it. And this commercial is great.

And I bet that within a few years it's the beer of choice for many F1 fans because of their influence in the sports. That's the Pavlov's dog effect for the big business.

This was written while sipping a Spruce flavored micro-brewery beer made by Rekolan Panimo.

haha, yup. Heineken can't make beer, but can obviously make commercials!

AIUI that is precisely what the option is for.

Makes sense, at least then if Alonso should leave then they have an experienced driver and not force the pressure onto Vandoorne.

Probably, but my choice is nice micro-brewery stuff, some IPA or the cheapest bulk stuff, depending on the mood. Tonight it's the nicer stuff in moderate quantities...since micro-beer is f*cking expensive in Finland. Like 4 - 5 € for a small bottle from a grocery store.

I prefer micro breweries but if someone is offering a free Heineken, then yes please!

About two decades ago in Finland there was an advert when a man in bad condition came out of bar and said: "I have never drunk milk. And I'm not going to."

Lemmy did it better.

Massa: Now finally he can take the Brazillian Mafia with him that prevents Williams from ever issuing team orders to let the faster Bottas car past to benefit the team, or whatever it was that meant there was always team orders at Williams and it was always in his favour and it always meant the team's overall result suffered as a consequence.

Career highlight: Ferrari headbutt wall guy when they realised he hadn't won the title.
Bonus: Flip at Hockenheim.

Career lowlight: That race in the rain at Silverstone where he drove like a video game player who'd accidentally put it on extreme difficulty mode and spun about 20 times.
Oh wait, that was races wasn't it? (2002 and 2008)
Bonus: Fernando is faster than you (he'd actually dominated that race, made the better start and was ahead, but this is Ferrari, they don't let their drivers race on track!)

Button going I thought would get more lamentation.
It can't just be me and FOM radio guy (who loves picking up a Jenson rant over the overs) who'll really miss him?

I hope he gets as many farewell's as Massa will.
This isn't Mika in 2001, this isn't a sabbatical, this is it, Jenson, you might as well not present it as anything else.

Williams doesn't use team orders because they're too afraid to do it. or maybe they forgot to put a similar contract from Ferrari stating that "team priorities must be satisfied at all times"

they told Massa to let Bottas pass, he said no and they just let go. they also didn't opted to dare to get track position on the race and not even develop the car, now they're facing the consequences

Half of Atlas is almost in mourning. The problem is that it's not a retirement (and I don't think he would have accepted Ron's bullshit offer unless he was very much certain that Alonso was going at some point very soon and that he was first in line when that happened), so no-one is treating it as such.

I wouldn't mind if Mercedes gave Felipe a cheat engine for Interlagos, assuming the titles are wrapped up by then.

---------------------------------------------

Something to ponder; once Kimi and Alonso retire the oldest driver on the grid will be Lewis.

I suppose, but as I see it this kind of bullshit stopped us giving Hakkinen a proper send off too.

I'm going to treat it as a retirement and any Jeff-Gordon-esque reappearance will be a bonus.

Mika's situation was different. He'd had a crap year, and he got hurt again, and he seemed properly fed up with driving. And, even if he had wanted to come back, there was no space to do so. None of those things apply here.
