I got a well deserved one-two from McLaren on April 8th, which is my birthday, 2007. After a year of not winning, so that was a nice present. 8)

The end of February is a boring time for F1 unless you count pre-season testing. Still, the Daytona 500 was on my birthday this year, and the last time that event and date lined up was in 1963 :p

This year's Malaysian Grand Prix, for starters ... probably others.

Other notable events: Exxon Valdez oil spil. The Great Escape. Steve McQueen's Birthday. Bhutan became a democracy. John Harrison, inventor of the Maritime clock was born and died. World Tuberculosis Day.

Yeah, the only notable race I can remember that occoured on my birthday would be Atlanta 2000, where Dale Earnhardt edged out Bobby Labonte at the line.

I have to say I agree with that. I've said that he had a bad weekend in China, but every driver has that. He's in a difficult environment and China was a bad event for him - for which he was rightly criticised. He does have to improve, but too many people overlooked that he did quite well in Australia. Handing out criticism is fair, but only to an extent. It's like people slating Gutierrez for his error - yes, it was a rookie mistake, but making a misjudgement doesn't mean Sauber should have kept Kobayashi, for example.

If in 5 or 6 races time we're still looking at him in this situation then I can see cause for the criticism mounting.

On a similar note, it is funny that people are ready to beat up on Perez so quickly, whereas Button was given quite a long time last year when he was nowhere.

I can understand the critisicm a bit to be honest. He has been beaten by his teammates for a while now. Since he signed for McLaren he only scored 2 points, this year in Malaysia (arguably because the Force India's, Alonso and Button retired). His teammates scored in the same time 10 points (Kobayashi last year) and 12 points (Button this year). I think a lot of people just expected so much more from him and he is not delivering at all at the moment. His accomplishments in China are probably the straw that broke the camel's back.

That's all well and good Fermani, but Checo is merely talking about the criticism following China. He's had one bad race, and yet all of a sudden people are coming out of the woodwork and writing him off. That's a bit much don't you think?

Checo's performances in Australia and Malaysia were very good, but considering where he ran they flew under the radar and not many people noticed.

I'm just looking at the results for now.

I think if you look at the results he scored this season and last season after he signed for McLaren, I can understand the criticism. Like I said, Kamui scored after Checo signed for McLaren 10 points, Peréz nothing. This season Perez qualified 5 places behind Button in Melbourne, 2 in Sepang and 4 in China. Perez scored 2 points (if FI didn't fuck up, I think Perez would have pointless in Malaysia too), Button 12. Even if you look at all the practice sessions so far this season, in only one of them (FP2 Malaysia) Perez was faster then Button.

That would mean that in all 15 sessions this season (counting Q1, Q2 and Q3 as one session), Perez has been beaten 14 times!

I don't mean to say Perez is a bad driver, nor that he should be fired, be put back to Sauber etc etc. But I do think people expected much more from him. Especially because he scored 3 podiums last year with his Sauber. The McLaren this year isn't helping him either, but he is consequently being beaten by Button. You can say Button is a great driver and Sergio is new to the team, but still I expected him to be much closer to his teammate and beat him more then he does now.

But like I said, I base this on results, I'm don't recall Perez getting a lot of screentime in Melbourne/Sepang, why you think his race was good?
