I've heard somewhere that the biggest issue with grass and gravel traps is that FIM (the motorbike federation) are reluctant to them, for bikes is much safer the use of tarmac. Even astroturfs are harmful to them (this year is the first time they are racing in Spielberg, that's why astroturfs were replaced by that red concrete or whatever). IMO sometimes is true but other times is not like that, there are many tracks that are not home to motorbikes races and still have big run-offs. |

Obviously they stopped raking it in the 90s (because it was also a good car launcher), but I think their minds were made up by that point. |

Brands has had trap cameras as paddock and bottom bend for years, Palmer installed them when he bought the tracks, there is a pressure plate on the grass and when a car runs over it the camera snaps a photo which is instantly displayed in race control, three strike snd you're out and fined, even stricter in testing. Those didn't cos squillions, I think it was a few grand each which for an F1 track or the FIA is chump change, but as usual they can't be seen to be using an idea from a lowly club track so the FIA have to go a mega expensive complicated route to reinvent the wheel. |

There is this italian guy that has a great youtube account. He's been covering LMP1s private tests, on Monza, for years so I'm one of his subscribers. His lastest video appeared on my youtube page and it akwardly involves F1, something I stopped following since the beginning of 2015. It's a curious vid as the spray behind the rear wing is massive and likely the turbulent air will be big enough with such cars. I hope this will void the effect of DRS and it takes F1 back to almost no overtaking(excluding the "wore tire" ones), so hopefully that will force Charlie/FIA to finally tackle the problem instead of circumventing it with dumb gimmicks like DRS. F1s should be like F3s/LMP1s: relatively big spec diffuser(important to avoid designers managing vortices in the area) and short chord(which leads to low angles of attack) simplified wings. With that aero set, cars would be able to follow each other relatively close and racing would be decided by each driver's ability to overtake/defend, as F3/WEC clearly shows. Wider tires is definitely a good step on the right direction, eventhough tire war would be very important to me too. This new breed of cars are still quite heavy(the Sky vid says they will get even 22kg heavier) so I'm not sure the additional grip(wider tires and more downforce) will be enough to put them back to decent cornering speeds for an F1 car, though. On one of the linked vids, Davidson says that they are currently taking Chapel at 105mph and that he predicts it be more like 130mph next year. Well, I very much doubt that as that would be ~20kmh faster than even pre-2014 cars  But if that turns out to be real, maybe FPs/QLF will become worthy of watching for me again.

Well that video is clearly an inaccurate test of the 2017 wets. That would be red flag conditions or trundle around behind the pace car for 20 laps. Come on Ferrari, do some more authentic testing. |
