Let's wait. Current indycars look like shit, people complain a lot about their aero, yet they provide some of the most entertaining fields and road races.

If they do away with the but ugly rear bumpers and have more simplified aero, I actually don't mind the overall look of the indycars.

That'll change if they take the rear pods off (one of the more unexpected side effects of the rear bumper was it channelled air down towards the road rather than up, allowing the following car to follow really close, the effect was reduced somewhat when they let them redesign them but it still had an effect).

Yet when they go to real tracks like mid-ohio, the racing is rather crap tbh.

And the entertainment comes mostly due to cautions and average drivers.

Have you seen the track layout at Mid-Ohio? Pretty much every racing series is going to be crap there. It's damn near impossible to pass on that track.

Am I imagining things or is Mid-Ohio the very track where we had an exciting race just about two days ago?

Most F1 tracks are crap.

Holy shit, seriously, just a couple races ago we had a battle for the lead play out in the last lap (including drama)...

But yeah, F1 sucks. You know what else sucks? Everything. Life sucks, because I can't be entertained every waking minute of my day and there are off days and cloudy days and rainy days in-between sunshine and pleasures, just like there are shitty seasons in-between years like 2008 and 2012, and there are shitty races in between a Bahrain 2014, a Barcelona 2016 or an Austria 2016, and for every Spa or Monza there's a couple Abu Dhabis.

You want eternal bliss? Go buy drugs and OD on them. I guarantee that every second will feel greater than the previous until you die.

But... how can you guarantee this without experience?

How about F1 on drugs? Did that.

I'm just saying F1 since 2008 or so has been a real improvement over the vomit that's called "racing" we had in the early 00's.

And now they are going to try and fuck that up.

I actually agree on that and I sure hope it won't be the case!!

I used whatever minimal/incomplete/erroneous knowledge I have on an issue, then extrapolated/elaborated/hallucinated on that to reach a striking but dubious conclusion. Aren't we on the internet???

Vettel today tested the 2017 rain tyres.

I wonder what Charlie was thinking when he sees these pictures...

Force India were seemingly pushing the idea of an independents championship for the bottom 6 teams which would all be forced to run to a $100m cost cap. They would still run with the other teams & still earn regular driver/constructors points with the independents championship been a separate thing within the regular drivers/constructors championships.

Williams & STR weren't in favor of the idea so it doesn't seem like its going any further.

I like that idea, certainly works well in touring cars and other series

Too good an idea for F1, obviously.

if Williams complains FIA should just reply "well, you guys took the choice to be careful and not race harder, now you're backwards more and more"

I'd cap it a $150m. That is still an insane amount of money but I believe it is not a bad compromise. If teams go over the budget, their total prize money would decrease by the % amount they went over.

So if a team spent $165m they would receive 10% less than their allocated prize money. That % would then get distributed evenly to the other teams.

Another change I think might work in regards to aero development and cost is basically a token system. The FIA could allocate certain areas on the car where teams can do whatever they like, but they can only make 4-5 changes per year. We have the situation now where teams are bringing changes at practically every race. I'd argue that the time spent on developing and building out all these smaller ideas would be more than concentrating on larger mini development developments.

Are there other racing series that use or have tried a cost cap?

Yes but F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, manufacturers need to spend billions of dollars to show who's the champion of endless front wing redesigns, etc, etc.
