What's a NOPE in the second picture? I don't like heights but if anything it shows that the whole thing is safe and you're far from the edge with a wall and a ledge.

Try this natural infinite pool if you really want a nope (Devil's pool in Zimbabwe):

Fear is irrational, I guess. I would happily sit at the bar up there because then I know there is no combination of physics and clumsiness likely to result in me going over the edge

Some years ago one F1 photographer planned to go to Singapore Flyer so that he would be at maximum height when the race finishes. Too bad I can't find it just now.

The thought there may be a sudden urge to jump over is what scares me.

It's a natural feeling, most people don't act on it

Most people

Incidentally, I've been spending a bit of time browsing this reddit subforum lately: http://www.reddit.com/r/SweatyPalms/ .You guys should love it!

the pool is fine, the problem is a earthquake could happen and send the building into the ground

Now hold on a minute there. You're telling me that humans have a natural feeling of getting an urge to jump off when in a high place?

We're straying way off-topic on a race thread the day before practice begins, and nobody gives a crap, which is hilarious and says a lot about the current state of F1 and what we all think about it.

Hahaha, good to know that it's just not me with the edges of death.

Oh and don't worry about the Singapore GP, it's going to be awesome. I'm not going to be able to watch it. Since mid-1997 I've completely missed only Austria 2000, Indianapolis 2005 and Hungary 2009.

the problem started here for me:

Image

Image

I was in the middle of the bridge, right next to the railing and the water, taking a photo, I think it was 2015 - no fear whatsoever.

Suddenly there was a gust of wind and I moved very slightly - but right next to the railing. Then I thought - imagine I would have been blown in. And believe me, that river is deep and wild.
I wanted to get off the bridge asap. Then the next time I went over the bridge, I thought about the experience, and was afraid I'd jump over the railing for no reason. Afterall, the railing is so small and wouldn't prevent me from jumping.... I managed to cross the bridge safely.

This year, I walked it twice for 1/3 and had to return. I simply couldn't manage. Basically I was thinking: don't think about it, listen to the music... but to no avail.
I had to take the bus especially to avoid my fear

Just hole yourself up in your basement if you're gonna live your whole life on "what-if's."

I would love to go in the infinity pool. I really enjoy this race.

I'm guessing this bridge in China is a no-go then?

Oh dear god, no!

Not so much the glass floor, but rather the railings that look so small.

Plus the winds that probably blow at that height.

I wonder if some toddlers were raised with everything around them made in Plexiglas, if they would stop associating transparent objects with fragile glass like we do.

BTW: why don't they make oval track fencing with that bridge material and get rid of the cheese graters already?

Because a car hitting it would break it. Lots of large sharp bits going into the crowd.
