Wait, what? The modification had nothing to do with safety, they wanted more laps for the spectators and bigger grandstands.

Rainy days can be red flagged.

Safety on the dry was GREAT for a track that fast. Nothing to hit hard at the chicanes really, just sliding along barriers (cf. Alesi in 2000 and Herbert in 1999 when he lost his rear wing full speed before chicane 1). high-speed collisions were rare because in those times, drivers knew when to back off from stupidity when they feared for their lives.

Environment-wise, the new loop just destroyed more forest, when keeping the old layout would have been a status quo in terms of trees.

Question:
Is it forbidden in F1 to build a diesel engine? Im asking since they have to save fuel from start. If they had diesel engines they would probably go full power all distance and still have enough of fuel onboard. I dont know, im just asking. So dont throw rocks at me immediatley!

I always thought that they should have run down to the first chicane at least. They could have made the switch back quite interesting, with sweeping bends. Would have had to have cut down alot of trees, not sure on EU law, but couldn't they have on sold that fro a profit?

Agreed, DRS era the old track would have had great potential. But so has Monza the racing hasn't changed there.


You talk about this like the new Hockenheim is some kind of bastion of great grand prix racing, which it is not. I enjoyed each and every race I have watched from there, and several notable things occurred there as well. Ex: Forget the year when Hakkinen blew a tire at the end of the last straight, 1999 start crash, 2000 raining off and on, 2001 huge start crash as well as Shumacher's Ferrari blowing up, which I remember as being unheard of at the time (I started watching GP racing after Ferrari sorted their reliability), although I will agree the spectacle came from pure speed. It was also fun to see the drivers driving the cars with very little downforce (Monza and Spa are downforce tracks now). The track at least had that unique thing going for it. Now it's similar without character IMO.

James Hunt made a comment back in 1992 that the old Hockenheim wasn't a test of driver skill - it was just a car track. I agree.

It was a unique layout, but it was a nothing for the driver. The new track is better for drivers.

Have you looked at a list of the drivers who won there? All of them were either world champions or at least came close at some point. Also, in 1994 the Ferrari was not the best car, in 1997 the Benetton was not the best car, in 2001 and 2003 the Williams was not the best car (at least taking into account overall performances from those years) and I'm sure there are other examples going back further. In a way, isn't that like saying an oval is not "better for drivers"? Anyways, I just wish we didn't find ways to suck some character out of things like Formula One. The whole idea of auto racing is superflouous! To give it some other purpose than entertaining is flawed logic IMO. I Still remember when Kimi blew that tire towards the end in 2003?

I agree about the character thing, the old layout was a throwback to years past, it was something different. Yes it was an easy track to drive, but it was a test for engines. Not to mention it was one of the few tracks where slipstreaming was effective.

I was watching some races from the old circuit thinking about how narrow it was, and how awesome that is! It gives a sense of speed, and side by side battles were always close. And it's different from all the identical boring wide circuits we have now. Why does every single new track have to be so wide?
