would be funny if rain should come, just to add the extra difficulty.

Rain might actually help some of them, as they can use less power. Either way, it's been a good few years since I was this excited about an F1 race, so yay.

As an expat Melbournian, the weather for the race will be as follows. Race to start in arctic conditions with a bitterly cold southerly wind (real possibility of snow for like....the first time ever), mid race to be run in sub saharan conditons with air temp of 40 degrees and track temperature of 60 degrees with as blisteringly hot northerly (dehydration a real possibility), end of race to finish under saftey car as a flood of biblical proportions will hit the track, evening will have not a cloud in the sky and be pleasant light jacket material........

So if the weather forecast says nice and sunny, you better bring, shorts, t-shirt, down jacket, poncho, hat, beanie, wooly underleggings, gum boots and thongs (Australian or American thongs are both acceptable). If the weather forecast says cold and wet, still bring the above. :D

if i was a catheram i would drive with half my horsepower and in a very conservative way, there's a good possibility that just reaching the finish line would bring you a good result.

haha! it was my first time in melbourne last year, and on saturday it was awfully hot (23-25C) before the start of qualifying. so i walked down to the circuit in shorts and a t-shirt, got there, the clouds rolled in from out of nowhere, and i got soaked. struggled to find a poncho (they were pretty much sold out!), so had to buy a $300 jacket instead. had a miserable walk back to the cbd in the freezing cold (was like 10C!), shaking and shivering until i hopped on the tram. it was literally almost four seasons in one day. :D

My post was tongue in cheek....but anyone not familiar with Melbourne's weather, what Silverstone experienced is so so true.

Friday grandstand seat on the front straight, at least I'll see the Red Bull on track for a bit.

Can't tell who's going to finish this race tbh. Every team had problems during testing, this could be fun...

If I had to bet it would be Williams.

Did a rookie ever win his first race? If he keeps his head cool and has some luck on the mechanical side, while others have bad luck I can see Magnussen win this.

Not quite. Giancarlo Baghetti won his first championship race, but before that he had already won the Syracuse GP and driven in a few other non-championship races.

any good betting sites available? I'd go for a point or two for Bianchi.

Isn't there a rule somewhere you need to cover a certain distance compared to the winner? I think I saw once (German Grand Prix? Ligier?) that someone got 2 points for 5th place, but nobody got 1 point for 6th place.

You must be classified to score points, with means completing 90% of the race distance.

I imagine the red flag rule applies there: 75% race distance needs to be covered for the result to stand.

Given the current situation with testing, will Red Bull/Lotus/other Renault teams even be able to finish practice/qualifying without breaking down?!

I hate to sound like a broken record but it's not just the Renault teams that are in trouble. It wouldn't surprise me if single-digits of cars get to the flag in Australia.
