I've played a lot of football with my Dad. I wouldn't have if it wasn't for a bloke I never met called Sid Watkins. Never got to thank him.

One of the true heroes of motor racing, a man who saved many lives over the years including Hakkinen, Barrichello, Pironi and also built the sport to the point of nearly 20 fatality free years.

This is a great article on the man and everything he did for the spor, from the perspective of a fellow surgeon and creator of the Senna movie...

Some stuff that's widely known but other stuff that is new to me, like Senna holding Comas' head in the correct medical position after studying the prof working during Martin Donnelley's crash...

Dr. Sid Watkins, you'll be missed!

Thank you very much for your huge contribution to Formula One. I'll never forget his statements from when he visited Ayrton Senna's farm in Angra dos Reis (Rio de Janeiro state) for Fishing in 1993 and observed carefully Senna's lifestyle, his interaction with his family and society surrounding him. It's also very remarkable his concerns with Senna before the tragic weekend of Imola 1994.

RIP

I saw him at Silverstone, it seems strange to think that he's now gone.

He did so much for motor sport, a complete gentleman.

Although F1 gladiators are often considered heroes, Sid was the only real hero, by saving the lives of Häkkinen, Wendlinger, Donnelly, Berger and others.
May he rest in peace.

I don't know who I have more respect for in their quest to make F1 safer, Jackie Stewart for having the balls to stand up, raise awareness of safety despite being villified by those that should have known better, or Sid Watkins for having the foresight to not only implement the safety standars that Stewart wanted, but take those standards to a new level.

Its funny that here we are praising a DOCTOR for being one of the true unsung heros of motorsport....think about that, a DOCTOR not a driver. This says everything about the mans character

What would be good to see would be some tributes in Singapore, but more than that, drivers acting responsibly on circuit, seeing as the last few weeks has seen a lot of debate about driving standards.

Sid's legacy will be forever present, but it's a two-way street.
