And I was just about to write how Fridays seem to be incident free nowadays and how it's weird, because when you look at some old weekends from the late 90s or early 2000s, the practice sessions used to be crashfests. Nowadays they are on rails and even a spin is a rare sight.

If the championship battle was exciting, I would have woken up to watch live. I just watched the 10 minutes highlights of fp1 before live fp2, that will be sufficient. For Vegas I might wake up, to see the first track action on a new circuit live

I blame simulation work, driver training/prep since early career, budget caps, no T-car, and overall heightened levels of professionalism of everyone involved. Free practice isn't as much of a learning playground.

Also at this level you don't expect many driver errors any more. Those 99 cars were awful - narrow, twitchy, rock hard tyres and no grip.

that's why they're looking to a full discard of practices in the future, cars arrive with setups pratically done and they do is upgrade validation

Based on 2020 when NASCAR just showed up with zero practice and started the race, it didn't seem to affect them much

Just make the races half an hour longer so the teams can spent the early part working on setup and let them adjust more things in a pit stop and they'll be fine...

Good point is with simulations. I don't think they had iRacing/Assetto/rFactor2/ many others back then :P
