On February 14, 2001, the cash-strapped Prost team suddenly looked like the team to beat ahead of the F1 season.

Jean Alesi, having already topped two of the previous four days of testing at Estoril, lapped the Portuguese circuit over a second quicker than anybody else had managed - or would manage - during the winter.

The rumours of the AP04 running massively underweight in a bid to grab instant headlines and convince potential sponsors to part with their cash, flew instantly - especially as the car had also gone second fastest at Barcelona two weeks previously. The rumours were right too. Sponsors secured, the car showed its true colours, scoring only four points all year.

McLaren has confirmed that Webber did have an ECU software issue in Australia

The AP-04 wasn't a bad car, they just ran it in an illegal configuration during the tests to try and get sponsors.

Sauber did a similar-ish thing in 2010. The car was being talked about as a potential podium contender but spent much of the early races being rather slow and unreliable.

Did it work out for them? I recall Brawn GP for having a fantastic winter but no extra sponsors in Melbourne. Monster Energy became a big one during the season but I thought that this was even after Jenson's winning streak.

Regardless of the source it's pretty accurate. And those were the only sponsors Prost secured for 2002, who was already a team struggling for survival. EDIT - looks like we on the same page with PSN and Parmalat

Looking back at articles across the internet, Alesi went stupidly quick at Estoril (and other tests that winter), then just a handful of days after the final Estoril test Acer were confirmed and announced as a sponsor (and badger of the Ferrari engines) for 2001. Yeah, durrrrhhhh not 2002. It's not really a coincidence that the car wasn't officially unveiled until the Australian GP, where the actual pace of the car was also officially unveiled.

Well it wasn't a denial, it was a sort of "Well there's nothing wrong with it generally, just this little bit" http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/106136 Which was a little odd. Just think, 6 years ago McLaren had Fernando, Lewis and the 22. Yes the car was a little bit photocopied but still. How the mighty have fallen.

Prost GP was dead by 2002. The Autosport article makes it sound as though dozens of companies were flinging their money at the team after that test. If they really wanted that, they should've put adverts in the local newspapers at each GP.

I wasn't aware that Red Bull were paying for ECUs that 'mostly' worked, or ECUs that randomly decided to desync from the pitwall.
