Talking of which, we're due for a updated rumour of Audi joining... we haven't had one for a while.

BBC headline predictably takes it too far towards "definite fact" ...

Well the rumours are a bit more concrete this time, suggesting that Honda has already visited McLaren in Woking.

I think the biggest question is if Honda can produce a proper engine for 2014 or if they need another year. And of course how Mercedes wil react, I don't think they're in for just a 1-year deal with McLaren.

Well I'd imagine if Honda were looking at entering, they'd have started quite a while ago

How do you know they haven't..?

Racecar Engineering ran a report last October saying they'd heard Honda had started on a project. It creates an interesting dynamic for McLaren because Mercedes must supply McLaren until 2015, but obviously Mercedes isn't too keen on McLaren using their turbo for a year and taking a lot of the knowledge to Honda.

It'd be interesting to see how joining in 2015 will be different to 2014 in terms of how good the engine is, but it's showing that going to the new Power Units is a good step for the sport.

Indeed, I remember Gary Anderson talking about it during one of the practise sessions last year, he said Honda love the technical challenges of things like engine design, but they aren't too flash on the on things like team management

McLaren could be in real trouble if Honda wants to join in 2015 and Mercedes refusing to supply engines for 1 year and having their technology in Honda's hands.

Is the engine-freeze still in place for 2014 or are they, as it's a complete new engine, more lenient? If still in place, why would Honda join too soon and risk getting stuck with a poor engine?

Possible solution: 2014 McLaren-Mugen, 2015 McLaren-Honda.

McLaren have been with Mercedes for nearly 20 years it'll be a big event when they change engine suppliers

Mercedes has no choice, the contract option is in McLaren's hands.

Well that's a relief for McLaren then, otherwise they would have been in a very difficult situation.

What I'm wondering is if Honda will supply to other teams as well? I guess so, not?

But is it beneficial for McLaren? They probably won't get the best engineers from Mercedes.

I wouldn't have thought so really. Red Bull is basically Renault now in that respect, Ferrari, Mercedes obviously with their own engines.

Beneficial for McLaren? I don't know really. Personally I'd love to see it.

Interesting

Drug testers raid Formula One drivers

Quote:
Drug testers have swooped on the homes of several Formula One drivers in surprise early morning raids.

Ferrari's dual world champion Fernando Alonso said the testers, from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), arrived at his house at 6.42am on Tuesday (local time).

New McLaren driver Sergio Perez confirmed he had endured a very early morning wake-up call as the result of a surprise urine test.

And Torro Rosso racer Daniel Ricciardo tweeted that he ''Got drug tested early hours this morning.''

He said: ''All of a sudden pissing in your own home becomes difficult with someone staring over your shoulder.''

Drug testing in F1 is relatively rare, but it is not the first time officials have made surprise visits to drivers' homes.

In 2009 Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg - then with Williams F1 - was drug-tested by WADA while on holiday in Ibiza.

He said the agent woke him up at 7am one morning, informing him that he had been selected for random drugs spot-check.

''My girlfriend took the call,'' Rosberg said. ''So it was lucky that the test took place at all because she doesn't like being woken up early while on holiday.''

Mark Webber recently called on Formula One's governing body, the FIA, to step up its drug testing, after a motorcycle racer was banned.

Former MotoGP rider Anthony West, who now races in the second-tier Moto2 category, was banned for a month after testing positive for the stimulant Methylhexaneamine.

Webber welcomed motorcycling's push to ensure the sport is drug-free, and called on the FIA to become more active on the issue.

''I've always been championing the idea to do more of it, but the FIA have never really been that strong on it,'' Webber said.

''The other drivers have never been super strong on it, so it's never really been a huge issue.''

Domestically, V8 Supercar drivers will be drug tested up to three times more often under tougher anti-doping rules to be implemented by motor sport authorities, according to a Fairfax report.

Through CAMS, V8 Supercars complies with the anti-doping requirements of WADA and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

Racing drivers have not been implicated in the recent Australian Crime Commission's investigation into drugs and corruption in sport but CAMS will review its approach to anti-doping, illicit drugs and also race fixing and corruption.

Good, and I hope it continues, though I'm not sure how much of an advantage drugs would have in F1 for the drivers, it's not as if they struggle to perform their best all the way through a GP, I mean they are fit enough.

I don't think they would need the physical performance enhancing drugs commonly associated with sports like cycling and athletics - the physical demands of driving in Formula One are there (and in motorcycle racing maybe a bit of physical strength advantage would help), but not as extreme as endurance cycling and I don't think you'd gain an advantage from those kinds of drugs as opposed to the regular gym time, it's more for mental stimulants ...

I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was in relation to either Lance Armstrong or AJ Allmendinger, but someone mentioned that there simply aren't any drugs that are able to enhance a drivers abilities
